Social Responsibility and Justice in an Emerging World Order: Efficacious Oath-Practice as the Grundnorm

Publisher / Conference Name
African Society
Abstract / Summary
Oath-practice is one of the channels of justice, and is provided for in the law. Although oath declares a solemn promise and establishes some conduct and liability, many individuals act contrary to their promises. Lying under oath is perjury (a crime). Thus in an African traditional setting, oath involves some curse (or vindication)—it attracts the wrath of gods if one acts against one ’s allegiance. Hence oath is the final arbiter. Even though Kelson considers the grundnorm as the foundation of all other laws, he fails to locate it in the sphere of justice. More-over, one must recognize that humans could be deceptive and, therefore, unreliable. In this case, oath is supreme in that no human category can validate oath further as its Grundnorm nor form the basis of its authority; obligation to it is a compulsion because of its efficacy. Accordingly, the main objective of this article is to analyze some literature on justice, espouse the pitfalls in Keisen ’s (positivist) theory and articulate the metaphysical bases of oath. To achieve this, the work adopts the qualitative/analytic methodology. It discovers that, based on the deceptive/finite nature of man and the African experience (as expressed among the Etsako of Nigeria), the very idea of a Grundnorm is extra-human. The work concludes that among traditional Africa, an efficacious oath is final arbiter and, therefore, the Grundnorm. Hence the work recommends that traditional African mode of oath-taking should be enshrined in modem court setting so as to assure ultimate justice.

Abstract
This report investigates the antioxidant capacity of an ethanol extract from the plant Funtumia elastica on the liver and kidneys of Wistar rats. Antioxidants play a crucial role in protecting cells from oxidative stress, which can lead to various diseases. The study evaluated the effects of the plant extract on several antioxidant parameters, including malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione (GSH), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) activity in the liver and kidney tissues. The results demonstrated that the ethanol extract modulated these antioxidant parameters to varying degrees in the liver and kidneys. Notably, the extract exhibited a protective effect against lipid peroxidation in the liver, as evidenced by significantly reduced MDA levels in the Groups 3 and 4 compared to the control. Additionally, catalase activity was significantly upregulated in the liver of Group 2. However, GSH levels were significantly lower in the livers of treated groups compared to controls, suggesting potential compromise of the antioxidant defense system. No significant differences were observed for SOD and GPX activities in both organs across the groups. While the extract showed promising antioxidant effects, particularly in the liver, further research is needed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms and explore potential therapeutic applications. The findings contribute to the understanding of Funtumia elastica's antioxidant properties and its potential use in managing oxidative stress-related conditions affecting vital organs

Abstract
The growing need for sustainable and environmentally friendly materials across various sectors has generated an increased interest in the extraction of bamboo fibres. The primary objective of this study is to tackle the obstacles linked with bamboo fibre extraction and analyze the effectiveness of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution in improving the quality of the extracted fibres. The endeavour was initiated to analyze the historical progression of bamboo fibre extraction techniques, the significance of chemical treatments in fibre processing, and the specific impacts of NaOH treatment on fibre characteristics. The study encompassed an extensive review of pieces of literature to comprehend the context and importance of bamboo fibre extraction, encompassing both conventional techniques and contemporary advancements. The experimental arrangement for distilled water and NaOH treatment was formulated, encompassing variables such as concentration fluctuations at 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% NaOH. The weight of water used was also calculated to be 1000g, 950g, 900g, 850g, and 800g to form solutions respectively. The Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was applied to investigate the chemical structure of fibres before and after treatment, providing important details on the success of the extraction method. Data collection techniques involved sample preparation, maintenance of controlled environmental conditions, and statistical evaluation of experimental findings. The outcomes showed that NaOH treatment efficiently dissolved lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose constituents from the bamboo fibres, resulting in purer and cleaner fibre outputs. FTIR analysis corroborated the partial elimination of non-cellulosic components, with heightened NaOH concentration correlating with increased removal of lignin and hemicellulose. The discoveries from this investigation enhance comprehension of the chemical composition of bamboo fibres and underscore the potential of NaOH treatment in refining extraction processes. Additionally, the implications of the outcomes for industrial utilization, alongside suggestions for future research, are comprehensively deliberated.
