Abstract
This study examined the impact of child neglect on the academic performance of pupils in primary schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. It aimed to identify the common types of neglect, how neglect affects pupils’ learning behaviour and performance, and the role of social workers in addressing the issue. A survey research design was adopted, and data were collected from 400 pupils in two primary schools using structured questionnaires. The data were analyzed using frequency tables and percentages with the aid of SPSS.Findings revealed that child neglect, caused by factors such as poverty, broken homes, and poor parental supervision, negatively affects pupils’ concentration, attendance, and overall academic achievement.The study also found that while social workers contribute to identifying and assisting neglected pupils, their presence in schools remains inadequate. The study concluded that child neglect has a significant negative impact on pupils’ education and recommended increased parental awareness, employment of more social workers in schools, teacher training on child protection, and stronger government intervention to ensure the well-being of all children

The study was designed to investigate the impact of students’ characteristics on the academic performance of senior secondary schools in randomly selected schools in Ovia North-East local government area of Edo State. Poor performance has been the order of the day over the years in public senior secondary schools’ examinations. It was observed that many interacting factors may cause poor performance of students in secondary schools. Student characteristics such as age, career choice, gender, study time, class attendance being amongst the factors were referred to as student characteristics. The objective of this study was to determine the influence of students’ characteristics (age, career choice, gender, study time and class attendance) on academic performance of senior secondary school. Five research questions were raised to guide the study. Stratified random technique sampling was used to select schools for the study. Two hundred and thirty-seven (237) students registered from five (5) selected public senior secondary schools were used to carry out the study. The item on the questionnaire was developed based on the objectives of the study. Data were analyzed using quantitative and qualitative method where descriptive statistics including mean, frequency, percentages as well as standard deviation were used. It was observed that students’ age, career choice, gender, study times and class attendance influence students’ performance in senior secondary school. The study shows that (37.1%) were 17 years old, also majority of student (29.5%) would wish to pursue
medical related career while the highest mean performance of (61.4571). It was also
observed that female had the highest population of (54.4%) and the mean performance score of (59.0370). (37.9%) of respondent choose home and holiday as their convenient study time and had the highest mean score of (76.8890), and finally students who attended classes regularly were (69.6%) and had highest mean score of (53.6667). Counsellors should be employed in public senior secondary schools who will in-turn guide the students towards making a better career choice. However, there were significant relationship between students’ characteristics and academic performance.

THE IMPACT OF POLITICAL GODFATHERISM ON ELECTORAL OUTCOMES IN EDO STATE: A CASE STUDY OF THE 2024 GUBERNATORIAL ELECTION.

This study examines the impact of political godfatherism on electoral outcomes in the 2024 Edo State gubernatorial election, focusing on how political godfathers influence voter behaviour, candidate selection, and the perceived credibility of the electoral process. Godfathers dominated candidate selection and party processes, weakening internal democracy, elite theory explains this as power concentrated in the hands of a few, while patron – client theory highlights the exchange relationship between godfathers and loyal supporters. The research adopts an empirical approach, utilizing structured questionnaires administered to 250 respondents across selected local government areas in Edo State (Egor local government, Esan west local government, Etsako west local government). Data were analyzed using empirical tools and
regression analysis to determine the extent of relationships between variables. The findings indicate that political godfathers continue to shape electoral dynamics by influencing voter turnout through endorsements, mobilization efforts, and strategic directives targeted at their loyalists

THE IMPACT OF TEAM WORK ON ORGANIZATIONAL PERFORMANCE: A CASE STUDY OF EDO STATE BOARD OF INTERNAL REVENUE

This study investigated the impact of teamwork on organizational performance at the Edo State Board of Internal Revenue. Specifically, the study sought to identify the aspects of teamwork that enhance organizational effectiveness, examine the challenges employees face while working as a team, and assess how teamwork affects overall organizational performance. A survey research design was employed, and data were collected through a structured questionnaire administered to thirty (30) employees across different departments. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including frequency and percentage tables. Findings revealed that trust among team members, willingness to resolve problems, reliability, confidentiality, and effective leadership are key aspects that positively influence organizational effectiveness. The study also identified limited employee participation in decision-making and leadership-related constraints as major obstacles to teamwork. Furthermore, teamwork was found to improve task completion speed, service quality, utilization of skills, and organizational output. The study concluded that effective teamwork significantly enhances organizational performance. It is recommended that management strengthen team-building initiatives, promote employee involvement in decision-making, and provide regular training to foster collaboration and improve overall performance.

ASSESSMENT OF OUTDOOR RECREATIONAL BEHAVIOURS AND THE PREFERENCES OF RESIDENTS IN IKPOBA OKHA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE

This study was carried out to assess the outdoor recreational behavior and preference of residence in Ikpoba – Okha Local Government area of Edo State. The descriptive survey research method was adopted for the study. The instrument for data collection was structure questionnaire; the simple random sampling technique was used to select a total of four hundred (400) residents from Ikpoba – Okha LGA. The data obtained were analyzed using frequency count and simple percentage, based on the
analyzed data and review of related literatures the following major important points were summarized as follows; only a few of the residence in Ikpoba – Okha LGA regularly go for picnics with friends as a form of recreational activity. They do not played much of tennis as a sport for recreation during their leisure time but rather did more of football. A handful of the residence go for camping activities as a recreational activity. Based on the findings of the study, the following recommendations were made; to increase the level of participation in outdoor recreation activities, there should be increased level of advertisement and public enlightenment by those who operate recreational centers and the government, entry fees to various recreational facilities should be made as affordable as possible so individuals at the different levels of social stratification participate, measures should be put in place to prevent harassment of any kind that may occur on recreation grounds.

This study examined the whistle blower protection in the reduction of corruption in the Edo State Ministry Works. The study objectives among others were to investigate the whistle blowing mechanism, examine the whistle blower protection in Nigeria and Edo state as well as a look into whistle blower protection effectiveness in reducing corruption in Edo state Ministry of Works. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design, which is a non-experimental method. The purpose of descriptive research is to describe that which exists as accurately and clearly as possible. The study found out that whistleblower is one who engaged in exposing corruption in public and private sector institutions. The study found out that whistle blower does not enjoy any legal protection in Nigeria and Edo state. The study found out that whistle blowing protection has not been effective in reducing corruption in Edo state Ministry of Work. The study concluded that the absent of legal protection of whistle blower in Nigeria and Edo state is encouraging corruption. The study recommended that the Edo state government and Nigeria parliaments should pass a bill effectively protecting and regulating whistle blowing in Nigeria. There is still opportunity to fine-tune the provisions, especially those surrounding reporting mechanisms and protecting the whistleblower’s identity. The study also recommended that the government should reconsider its policy of excluding private contracts related to fraud. The term voluntary return of funds by the wrongdoer should be removed from compensation claims for whistleblowers.

This study is to investigate the issues and prospect in federal character principle and national integration. The study objectives includes federal character principle impacted the different aspects of the Nigeria polity,the issues with the federal character principle in University of Benin, the challenges of the federal character principle in University of Benin, and the prospects of the federal character principle in University of Benin. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design, which is a non-experimental method. This study used stratified sampling technique to select 13 respondents from the fifteen (15) faculties in the University of Benin resulting in a total sample size of 195 respondents. The study find out that Nigeria is a plural society with different cleavages; ethnic, religious, cultural, linguistic, as well as geo-political, social and economic challenges. Ethnic heterogeneity is inarguably, the most pervasive of them all. The study find out that there is mutual suspicion existing among the various social groups.The finding from the study indicated that the method of application of federal character principle is very doubtful. The study finds out that the application of the federal character principle in Nigeria has encountered several difficulties. The finding showed that the University of Benin has a mechanism put in place for promoting ethnic balancing. However, the mechanism put in place by the University of Benin for promoting ethnic balancing is not working. Finding showed that the lack of application of federal character principles is one of the challenges of the principle. The study recommends that the federal character principle should not be applied in employment processes into government established institutions. Everything regarding employment should be on merit and not sentiment. A constitutional amendment is recommended to establish true federalism, allowing Universities to control 50% of their resources.

SEXUAL BEHAVIORAL PATTERNS AND SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED INFECTIONS AMONG YOUNG ADULTS IN OREDO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, EDO STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract
This study examined sexual behavioural patterns and sexually transmitted infections among young adults in Edo South senatorial district of Nigeria. The objectives of the study were to ascertain the age at first sexual intercourse of the young population ages 10-24 years, ascertain if any association exists between young population age at first sexual intercourse and religious belief, ascertain incidence of contract of sexually transmitted infections by the young adult population, observe the “health seeking’’ behavior of young adult population when infected with these sexually transmitted infections, and ascertain the extent of young adult population knowledge of HIV/AIDS’ transmission. A sample size of 800 was used for this study. The sample size were chosen bearing in mind the time, finance and feasibility of the study. Out of the 800 questionnaires that were sent out for the study, about 783 were fully completed. Information gathered from the questionnaire was coded and recorded on the spreadsheets. From here they were fielded into the computer for statistical analysis using the SPSS computer software. In all percentages and proportions, pie and bar charts were used for data interpretation. The
chi-square test of significance and F-ratio were used to test the hypotheses. Findings from the study reveals that a greater number of youth of ages (10-24) years of both sexes are engaged in schooling activities. The population of the youth increases with age. The youth comprises slightly more males than females. That they are more engaged at school indicates rising age at marriage. Thus there is reduced likelihood of early marriages and associated consequences. The full embrace of education by youth is of benefit to the individuals as well as to the Nation in thence of skilled man power development. The study then recommended that preventive programs should focus on developing positive attitude toward infected persons in a way that they are not discriminated against, reproductive health information, including STDs should be included in university curriculum in order to enhance student knowledge and attitude regarding STDs prevention, free HIV testing should be inculcated into the undergraduate students my management in order to be able to receive HIV testing without financial burden. This action may increase the rate of HIV testing among the student population and in turn reduce rates of transmission. It was also recommended that students’ sources of information should be increased in terms of mass media and health education regarding the spread of STDs on campus, and STDs prevention programme should be developed
and implemented by the university to promote changes in attitude in order to prevent the spread of STDs

This study was designed to analyze school climate and students academic performance in public junior secondary school in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. Three research questions were raised to guide the study. What is the predominent school climate in public junior secondary school in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State? What is the level of students with performance in junior public secondary school in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State? Is there relationship between school climate and students academic performance in public junior secondary school in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State? The descriptive survey research design was used for this study. The population of the study comprises of students from the twelve (12) secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. A sample size of 184 students were randomly selected from Three (3) secondary schools out of the twelve (12) secondary schools under Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. Questionnaire was the instrument used to elicit information from the respondents. The data collated were analysed using frequency count, percentages, mean and standard deviation while the hypothesis was tested using Anova. The findings from the study revealed that the predominant school climate in the study area was characterized by the importance of well-enforced rules and regulations in mitigating student indicipline. This perfection is congruent with the existing literature emphasizing the role of discipline in maintaining a conductive learning environment. Also the level of academic performance of students in the junior secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area was encouraging. A majority of students achieved five credits, including core subjects like Mathematics and English. These results reflect the potential influence of quality education and teaching resource on academic performance.The data indicate that the students in these schools are making commendable progress in their educational pursuits. In the study, it was also revealed there is a positive and statistically significant relationship between school climate and students academic performance.

This project aims to investigate and analyze various strategies for enhancing students' academic performance in the English language, by studying secondary schools in Ikpoba- Okha Local Government Area of Edo State. English language proficiency is a crucial aspect of education and has a significant impact on students' overall academic success. Recognizing the importance of effective language skills, this study seeks to explore different approaches that can be employed to improve students' performance in English. The research will involve a comprehensive literature review, examining existing studies, theories, and best practices in the field of language learning and teaching. It will explore various factors that contribute to students' performance, including teaching methodologies, curriculum design, assessment techniques, and student engagement. It will also employ both quantitative and qualitative research methods to gather data and evaluate the effectiveness of different strategies. Surveys, interviews, and academic performance
records will be utilized to collect relevant information from students, teachers, and
educational institutions within Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area. The data analysis will involve statistical measures, content analysis, and thematic coding to identify patterns, trends, and correlations. The findings of this study are expected to provide valuable insights into the strategies that can be implemented to enhance students' academic performance in English. The research outcomes will not only contribute to the existing body of knowledge in language education but also offer practical recommendations for educators, policymakers, and institutions
involved in English language instruction. Ultimately, it aspires to contribute to the improvement of students' language learning experiences, empowering them with the necessary skills to succeed academically and in their future endeavors.
