Abstract
This study investigates the profound and symbiotic relationship between corruption and insecurity within the metropolitan context of Benin City, the capital of Edo State, Nigeria. While the national discourse often treats these challenges in isolation, this research posits that entrenched corruption acts as a major catalyst for escalating insecurity, creating a cyclical impediment to socio-economic development.

Utilizing a case study approach and qualitative/quantitative data, the paper specifically examines how various forms of corruption—including the diversion of public security funds, the compromise of law enforcement recruitment and effectiveness, and general bureaucratic embezzlement (e.g., ghost payroll schemes)—directly contribute to the rise of specific crimes. Key security challenges analyzed include: kidnapping for ransom, armed robbery, and cultism/organized political violence.

The findings reveal that corruption within the state's administrative and security architecture not only depletes resources meant for effective policing and infrastructure but also fosters deep public mistrust, thereby hindering community cooperation critical for intelligence gathering. The study concludes that meaningful improvement in the security landscape of Benin City requires a holistic strategy that prioritizes comprehensive anti-corruption reforms within the government and security sectors to break the destructive feedback loop.

A STUDY OF GODFATHERISM IN NIGERIAN POLITICS: 2016 – 2020 GOVERNORSHIP ELECTION IN EDO STATE

Year of Publication
Publication Type
Abstract
This research examines the phenomenon of godfatherism in Nigerian politics, using the 2016 and 2020 governorship elections in Edo State as a definitive case study. Godfatherism is understood as a form of political corruption where an influential individual (the godfather) anoints a less influential candidate (the godson) for leadership positions to exert authority and influence over governance. The study is necessitated by the deep entrenchment of this practice in the Nigerian political system, which often makes it difficult for young, independent aspirants to gain power without the backing of wealthy, older politicians. This dependency frequently results in rifts, as seen in the cases of Bola Ahmed Tinubu/Ambode in Lagos and Chris Uba/Chris Ngige in Anambra, where godfathers historically held the upper hand. However, the Edo State 2020 governorship election, which saw Governor Godwin Obaseki's re-election against the wishes of his former godfather, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, represented a significant moment of resistance. This event, hailed by political figures as a "declaration of independence from the anti-democratic forces of godfatherism," provides a crucial basis for assessing the concept's changing dynamics. The aim of this research is to analyze and document the issue of godfatherism in Nigerian politics through the lens of the 2016–2020 electoral cycle in Edo State. The specific objectives are to: Document the origin and evolution of godfatherism in Edo State. Analyze the role of godfatherism in the 2016 and 2020 governorship elections in Edo State. Assess the challenges and overall effect of godfatherism in the Edo State governorship election, and its implications for the future of democracy in Nigeria. The research adopts a narrative and interdisciplinary approach, utilizing both primary sources (oral interviews) and secondary sources (textbooks, journals, and newspapers) to provide a comprehensive analysis. By focusing on the 2020 election, the study seeks to unravel the concept of godfatherism and its diminishing influence in the face of growing political awareness and the will of the electorate in Edo State and Nigeria as a whole.

Abstract
Excessive prostaglandin production had been reported to lead to uterine contraction and premature cervical changes contributing to preterm birth. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of negro pepper on the prostaglandin level during the gestation period of wistar rat. Sixteen (16) female wistar rats weighing 140 to 160 were purchased from the animal house of the Department of Anatomy, University of Benin. The rats were acclimatized for two weeks to the laboratory condition with free access to food and water.
The dry fruits after being grind were soaked with n- hexane using maceration method for 24 hrs and were filtered to obtain the filtrate which was evapourated to obtain the oil. The female rats were mated with male rate in the ratio of 2:1. The rats were grouped into 4 groups (A, B, C, D) in two phases (Germinal and Embryonic Phase) and administered negro pepper extract orally at the doses of 0.25ml/Kg, 0.5ml/Kg and 1ml/Kg respectively daily for 7 days. The rats were sacrificed using chloroforms ane thesia, the uterus was collect from the animal and homogenated with buffer solution and then centrifuged to collect the Supernatant which was used for the biochemical analysis.
The result were statistically analyzed, results obtained were expressed as mean ±SEM (Standard Error of Mean). Differences among the means were determined by one way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Values were considered statistically significant if P value is less than 0.05 (P<0.05). Results: there was a significant increase in PGE2 level at 0.5ml/kg compared with control, though there was no significant differences in PGE2 at 0.25ml/kg compared with control in the embryonic phase and there was a significant decrease in PGE2 at 0.25ml/kg and 0.5ml/g in the Germinal phase compared with control though there was no significant difference in 1.0ml/kg compared to control. In conclusion, Negro Pepper Extract at 0.5ml/kg significantly increased PGE2 level at the embryonic phase but significantly decreased PGE2 in 0.25ml/kg and 0.5ml/kg in the germinal phase compared to control showing that administration of negro pepper extract during pregnancy maybe detrimental to the pregnancy.

Abstract
A geophysical survey was carried out at Edo State Development and Property Agency (EDPA)Housing Estate, Benin City to determine the depth to water table at four points within the study area. The Geophysical method used was the Electrical Resistivity Method. The Vertical Electrical Sounding technique was used in the survey with the Schlumberger Array being the electrode setup of choice. Four electrical soundings were carried out with the aid of ABEM SAS 300 terrameter set. The reduction of the acquired data was done with a spreadsheet software. The Interpretation was done using software such as IX1D. 3D field was used to generate subsurface maps.
The results of our interpretation show that in every VES sounding a prolific aquifer was located at relatively shallow depths. The depth to groundwater values from VES 1, 2, 3, and 4 show us a depth to water table of 87, 107, 85, and 93 metres respectively. The groundwater flow direction was also determined and the groundwater is considered to be safe as the depth to groundwater is high enough to be out of contact with underground sewage storages and also, the clay beds above the aquifers serve as filtering medium for infiltrating groundwater and escaping sewage.
