Abstract
This project focused on the design and implementation of SmartLMS, an Artificial Intelligence assisted Learning Management System (LMS) developed to enhance digital teaching and learning in the University of Benin. The aim of the study was to create a flexible and user friendly platform that integrates AI features to support both lecturers and students in managing learning materials, assessments and performance analytics. The system was designed using Next.Js for the Frontend, Node.Js with the Express.Js framework for the Backend and MongoDB as the database, with JWT authentication to regulate signup and secured login to the platform, Cloudinary to handle and store uploaded materials and OpenAI and Gemini AI for AI-driven functionalities. The AI modules were implemented to help students with course materials summarization, self-practice test generation and keep track of students’ analytics. The system followed a modular design and was implemented to be responsive, reliable and accessible on both mobile and desktop devices. Results showed that SmartLMS improved teaching efficiency, student engagement and learning personalization while maintaining lecturer control over assessments, grading and students’ academic performance. The project concluded that SmartLMS provides a practical and scalable solution for integrating AI into education, offering a more interactive, intelligent and accessible learning experience that can be integrated into
different learning environments

IMPACT OF FIELD TRIPS ON THE KNOWLEDGE AND ATTITUDE OF STUDENTS TOWARDS THE IMPORTANCE OF HYGIENE PRACTICES

Year of Publication

Abstract
This study examined the effect of a simple field trip on students’ knowledge and attitude about hygiene practices. The research was guided by two hypotheses: (1) that there is no significant difference in the knowledge of students about hygiene practices between those who participated in the field trip and those who did not, and (2) that participation in a field trip has no significant effect on students’ attitudes toward hygiene practices. A quasi-experimental research design was employed, with students divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group participated in a field trip that provided practical exposure to hygiene practices and environmental sanitation, while the control group received only classroom instruction. Data were collected and analysed using independent samples t-tests to determine the effect of the field trip on students’ knowledge and attitudes. The findings revealed that students in the experimental group had significantly higher knowledge of hygiene practices than those in the control group. Similarly, the experimental group demonstrated more positive attitudes toward hygiene practices, showing greater appreciation and willingness to adopt healthy behaviours. The study concluded that a simple field trip is an effective experiential learning strategy that enhances both students’ knowledge and attitudes toward hygiene. The findings imply that health and hygiene education is more effective when learners are exposed to practical, real-world experiences that connect theoretical lessons to actual health behaviours and environmental practices. The study recommends that schools incorporate field trips into health and hygiene education curricula, provide adequate resources and support for such activities, and collaborate with health and environmental agencies to strengthen students’ participation in community sanitation and personal hygiene promotion. It also suggests further research on the long-term impact of experiential learning and comparative studies of different field-based instructional methods in improving hygiene
knowledge, attitudes, and practices among students.

Abstract
This study examined the knowledge, attitude, and practice of nutrition and healthy eating habits among students of a tertiary institution in Benin City, Edo State. Poor nutrition and unhealthy eating behaviours among young adults have been recognized as major public health concerns, contributing to the rising incidence of non-communicable diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and hypertension. The study adopted a descriptive cross-sectional design and utilized a stratified sampling technique with convenience sampling to select 200 participants from different academic levels and faculties. A total of 200 structured questionnaires were distributed and duly completed, yielding a 100% response rate. Data were analysed us ing the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 26.0, and results were presented in tables, charts, and figures using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results revealed that the majority of the students possessed good knowledge of nutrition and healthy eating habits, as indicated by a grand mean score of 1.8. Most respondents also exhibited positive attitudes toward proper nutrition, recognizing the importance of balanced diets, regular meals, and adequate hydration. However, despite their awareness, many students demonstrated poor eating practices, often skipping meals, consuming fast foods, and taking sugary beverages due to time constraints, limited finances, and the easy availability of junk foods. Hypothesis testing showed a significant relationship between students’ nutritional knowledge, attitudes, and their actual eating behaviours (p< 0.05). The study concludes that while students have good knowledge and favourable attitudes toward nutrition, these do not always translate into healthy dietary practices due to various socioeconomic and environmental barriers
