THE CAUSES AND EFFECTS OF PREMARITAL SEX AMONG UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF BENIN

Abstract
This study investigated the causes and effects of premarital sex among undergraduate students in the University of Benin. In recent years, premarital sexual activities have become increasingly common among young people, particularly university students who are exposed to diverse social, cultural, and academic pressures. This growing trend raises concerns due to its potential implications on students’ health, emotional wellbeing, and academic performance. The study therefore sought to identify the major factors that influence students to engage in premarital sex and to examine its consequences on their overall adjustment within the university environment. The descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. The target population consisted of 270 undergraduate students residing in Ekosodin Community, from which the sample was selected. A structured questionnaire was the principal instrument for data collection, and it was validated by experts in measurement and evaluation. The reliability of the instrument was confirmed through statistical analysis. Data collected were analyzed using mean to answer
the research question, while simple linear regression and independent sample t-test were used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that premarital sex among undergraduates is influenced by multiple factors such as peer group pressure, curiosity and the desire for sexual experimentation, exposure to media and internet content, lack of
comprehensive sex education, family background and parenting style, socioeconomic challenges, and the influence of alcohol and drug use. Furthermore, the study established that premarital sexual activities have far reaching effects, including poor academic performance, health risks such as sexually transmitted infections and unplanned pregnancies, emotional and
psychological distress, social stigma, and long-term relationship difficulties. Based on these findings, the study recommends that parents, educators, school counsellors, and policy makers intensify efforts toward providing comprehensive sexual education both at home and in schools. It also recommends strengthening counselling services within the university to help students cope with emotional and psychological challenges. Creating awareness programmed that discourage risky sexual behavior and promoting value-based education among youths were also suggested as measures to reduce the prevalence of premarital sex among undergraduate students.

The study adopted the descriptive survey research design. The population of the study comprisedof students in the Faculty of Education, University of Benin. The sample size of the studywasmade up of one hundred and twenty (120) students randomly selected from three course areas from the Department of Curriculum and Instructional Technology. A questionnaire titled " vii Undergraduate Students' Perception of Academic Writing Tasks" was used to collect data. Thedata collected were analyzed using simple percentage, mean and standard deviation for the research questions and t-test and ANOVA for the hypotheses. Three questionnaires and twohypotheses were raised to guide the study. The results of this study indicated that students preferred working on objective tests. Manystudents also have the view that academic writing is difficult and is challenging. Fromthe resultsof this study, tests are the most popular form of academic writing tasks among students withtermpapers being the least. Students perceived peer review and reading materials as very helpful inimproving their writing abilities. In addition, it was revealed that students differ in their attitudestowards academic writing tasks based on academic level and sex . Based on the findings of this study, it is recommended among others that more writing opportunities be provided to students in writing.

This study examined the Efficacy of Project-Based Learning in Enhancing English Language Proficiency Among Undergraduate Students in University Of Benin. To address its objectives, the research formulated three research questions, three objectives and three hypotheses. A sample of 100 respondents was surveyed using questionnaire. Data analysis was conducted using frequency count and simple percentage. Descriptive statistics revealed the perceptions and challenges surrounding the implementation of Project-Based Learning (PBL) in English language instruction at the University of Benin. Firstly,the research indicates awidespread positive perception among respondents regarding the efficacy of PBL in enhancing English language proficiency among undergraduate students.This positive perception is underscored by high percentages of agreement and strong agreement, suggesting that PBL significantly x contributes to language skills development.This finding highlights the potential of PBL as an
effective instructional approach for improving language skills among students.The study recommends several actions based on these findings.The study recommends that should allocate resources and support initiatives aimed at overcoming the challenges associated with implementing PBL within English language education. Additionally, it suggests Students should actively engage with and embrace the opportunities provided by Project-Based Learning (PBL) as a means to enhance their English language proficiency. Finally,it advises instructors should prioritize professional development opportunities aimed at enhancing their
understanding of PBL methodologies and strategies for effective implementation within English language instruction

ASSESSMENT OF PERSONAL HYGIENE PRACTICES AMONG UNDERGRADUATE HOSTELITES IN UNIVERSITY OF BENIN

The study dealt on the assessment of personal hygiene practices among undergraduate hostelites in University of Benin. To achieve the purpose of the study, four research questions were raised and answered. The descriptive survey research method was adopted for the study. The population for this study was made of all the 10,694 undergraduate residing in the hostels of the University of Benin during the 2024/2025 academic session. The sample size for the study was made up of 385 respondents. With the aid of the simple random sampling technique, 77 respondents each were selected from hall 1, hall 2, hall 3, hall 4 and hall 5, thus, making a total sample size of 385 respondents. The research instrument is a self- structured questionnaire. The instrument was validated by the researcher’s supervisor and two other experts in the department of Health, Safety and Environmental Education. The split-half method was used to determine the reliability of the instrument. The questionnaire was administered to a group of 20 respondents which were not part of the Study. A Cronbach coefficient of .795 was obtained. This shows that the instrument is reliable. For data analysis, frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation were used to calculate the research findings. Findings from the study revealed that there is high level of knowledge of personal hygiene among undergraduate hostel residents at the University of Benin. The study concluded that the common personal hygiene practices adopted by undergraduate students living in the hostels include bathing at least twice daily, brushing their teeth twice a day, washing their hands with soap after using the toilet, changing clothes and underwear daily, washing clothes at least once a week, trimming nails regularly, keeping their rooms and surroundings clean, and using deodorant body spray daily. The study recommended among others that the University should organise periodic hygiene
awareness campaigns and workshops for students, emphasising the importance of personal cleanliness, proper handwashing, dental care, and safe food handling practices to promote better hygiene habits.

AN ASSESSMENT ON THE HABITS OF CAFFEINE USE AMONGST UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF BENIN, EDO STATE, NIGERIA.

Background: Caffeine is one of the most widely consumed psychoactive substances globally, and its use is particularly common among university students seeking to enhance alertness, concentration, and academic performance. However excessive consumption may result in dependence and other health related effects. Objective: This study assessed the habits, patterns, and influencing factors of caffeine consumption among undergraduate students of the University of Benin, Edo State, Nigeria. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional design was employed, using a structured self- administered questionnaire distributed to 381 students selected through stratified random sampling across various faculties. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Chi-square tests to determine associations between demographic variables and caffeine use. Results: Findings revealed that caffeine consumption was highly prevalent (91.86%) among respondents. The most frequently consumed sources were carbonated soft drinks, tea, and energy drinks, with most students (62.47%) reporting daily intake, primarily for pleasure, relaxation, and improved concentration during study. Significant associations were found between caffeine consumption and variables such as age and place of residence, while gender, academic level, and faculty showed no significant influence. The results indicate that caffeine use is a socially accepted and academically functional behavior among students, often driven by environmental and academic pressures. Conclusion: The study concludes that although most students consume caffeine moderately, there is a need for continuous health education on safe consumption limits and the potential adverse effects of excessive use. It recommends that the university health unit incorporate caffeine awareness into student orientation programs and promote healthier coping strategies for academic stress.

Bullying and aggression within educational institutions are complex social issues that can have profound effects on students' well-being and academic performance. To address this concern, this study investigates the incidence and prevalence of bullying and aggression among undergraduate students in University of Benin, Benin city, Edo state, Nigeria. A descriptive research design was employed, involving a diverse sample of 200 undergraduate students. Data was collected through structured questionnaires, allowing for a comprehensive examination of
demographic characteristics, bullying experiences, and perceptions of university responses. The findings indicates that 45% of respondents reported experiencing bullying or aggression during their academic journey. Furthermore, the study reveals diverse demographic characteristics among participants, including gender, age and academic level. Dissatisfaction with the university's response to reported incidents was notable among respondents. This study contributes valuable insights
into the complex issue of bullying and aggression within higher education settings. It underscores the need for tailored interventions, improved support systems, and policies that promote a safe and inclusive environment for all students. The major findings of this research, revealed that the Impact of Online Teaching and Learning on the Academic Performance of undergraduate students in the Department of Educational Foundations, Faculty of Education, University of Benin can be analyzed through several lenses and it has potential to provide access to education for a wider range of students.

This study in its totality is an attempt to investigate the factors influencing female participation in sports among undergraduate students of the University of Benin. The need for this study becomes necessary owing to the fact that despite the health benefits derivable from sports participation, female participation is at the very low level. During the process of carrying out this investigation, five research questions were formulated and tested. 100 copies of questionnaires were administered to respondents. Simple percentage was used to analyze the data collected from the outcome of the research. Among others, the following are the finding of this study:
i. Physiological and anatomical constitution majorly hinders females from participating in sports.
ii. There are health benefits derivable from participating in sports. xii
iii. Female undergraduate students are interested in sports as much as
males. iv. Active and passive sports activities are the two types of activities performed by undergraduate students Based on the result of the study, recommendations were made. It is hoped that sporting activities would be embraced by all female undergraduate students in the future.

Over the decades, the increasing growth of cyberspace more commonly known as the internet has ushered in a new problem, the problem of cybercrime. Cybercrime has been a common problem in Nigeria from the early 2000’s and it has only gotten worse, and it’s costing the country of Nigeria in more ways than one. The majority of its perpetrators are undergraduate students in universities. This paper seeks to truly understand the ideology and perception of cybercrime from the university students’ perspectives. What pushes them to commit this crime and disregard possible consequences and why its common in universities especially and at the end of this research, propose a solution to the relevant authorities on how the problem can be solved.

This study investigates the determinants of depression on the academic performance of undergraduate students in the University of Benin City. The research aims to examine the relationship between depression and academic performance, identify the determinants of depression among undergraduate students, and explore the implications for university support services. The findings of the study reveal that depression has a significant negative impact on the academic performance of undergraduate students, with factors such as academic pressure, social isolation, and financial stress contributing to the development of depression. The study highlights the need for universities to provide accessible mental health support services, academic counseling, and stress management programs to support undergraduate students' mental health and academic success. This study contributes to the existing body of knowledge on depression and academic performance, providing insights for university administrators, mental health practitioners, and policymakers seeking to address the mental health needs of undergraduate students.
