Abstract
To be able to effectively discuss women and their form of nationalism in Southern Nigeria before independence, one may need to understand the role women played in precolonial Southern Nigerian societies, how women were viewed, their rights and privileges, the impacts colonial rule had on them, and how they responded to this rule. In precolonial Nigeria, the position of women was a reflection of their subordinate status. Men held the premiums in the society, and women had the sole purpose or responsibility to be mothers of the children of these men. The ability of a woman to give birth won her the closest attachment of her husband while barren women were always the object of scorn in the society. An instance is the Esan woman who is socially not recognized. She is always represented by her husband in any social affair even if the issue at stake directly concerns or affects her. Whatever contribution she has to make, she does so through her husband who is her voice and mouthpiece. This is only when she is respected, recognized and her contributions highly welcomed and valued. Also, as long as a woman is not married in sanland, no matter how successful she may be, her views and
contributions are not welcomed or accepted. She is considered to be an outcast and is treated as one without an owner. She is ot also recognized in and among the women community. Women are seen through the lens of marriage in a homestead.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to ascertain the effect of bank profitability on economic growth in Nigeria. However, in order to achieve the objectives of this study, we utilised four explanatory variables as proxies for bank profitability (credit to private sector, bank loans, bank return on assets and total assets to GDP) while real gross domestic product was used as a proxy for economic growth in Nigeria. The study covered a time period of 1995-2020 (26years). The descriptive statistics and regression analysis technique were adopted in carrying
out the study’s empirical analysis Based on the empirical analysis, the following findings were arrived at: firstly, the study ound that there is a positive and insignificant relationship credit to private sector and economic growth in Nigeria; second, the study found that bank loans have a significant effect on economic growth in Nigeria; third, bank return on assets have an insignificant effect on economic growth in Nigeria; and finally, total assets to GDP was found to have a positive and significant effect on economic growth in Nigeria. In view of the salient findings from this study, the following specific policy recommendations were put forth: banks in Nigeria should lend more to the private sector as doing so ensures they are lending to sectors that are likely to generate more income the loans granted which will culminate into a multiplier
effect of enhanced economic growth performance in the long run; the apex monetary authority in Nigeria (CBN) should ensure that banks are regulated to give out more proportion of their income as loans to individuals, private sector and public sector; banks should not leave customers’ deposits idle but should invest a large chunk of it on risk-free securities such as government bonds as well other risky securities with the adoption of effect risk management mechanism; and efforts should be made by banks to maintain continuous increase in their
assets which could be by diversifying, opening more branches, among others.

Lonchocarpus griffonianus (BAILL) DUNN (FABACEAE) ATTENUATES GROWTH PROLIFERATION: AN INDEX OF USAGE IN CANCER MANAGEMENT

Publisher / Conference Name
Department of Chemistry, University of Benin, Benin City, Nigeria - Nigerian Journal of Applied Sciences
Abstract / Summary
The significant mortality related to cancer diseases has ignited a sustained wave of research by scientists to improve cancer management through optimized medical facilities, development of immunotherapeutic biologicals, molecular inhibitors and discovery of anticancer agents from medicinal plants. Lonchocarpus griffonianus (Baill) Dunn Fabaceae) is used to treat tumourrelated ailments in Nigeria. This study aimed to validate the folkloric use of this plant as an antitumor agent using two simple benchtop assays. The stem and root bark of the plant were extracted with absolute methanol using a Soxhlet extractor. Cytotoxic and growth-attenuation effects of the methanol extracts were evaluated using Raniceps raninus (tadpole fish) and Sorghum bicolor seeds radicle. Similarly, the aqueous and dichloromethane fractions of the stem bark extract were assessed. Results showed that the methanol extracts possess dose dependent cytotoxic nd growth-suppression activity, with the stem bark being the most potent. The stem bark extract (80 µg/mL) caused statistically significant (p<0.0001) 100 % mortality in the tadpoles. Growth-suppression effect of the same extract was 96 % at 30 mg/mL after 96 hours. Similarly dichloromethane fraction exhibited significant (P<0.0001) cytotoxic activity, 80 µg/mL exerted 100 ± 0.00% mortality to the tadpole, while 80 µg/mL of the aqueous fraction only caused 3.33 ± 3.33 % mortality which was not significant when compared to the control at P<0.0001. 30 mg/mL exerted a significant (P<0.0001) growth suppression of 1.27±0.19 mm (77.39 % suppression) within 24 hours which increased to 1.91±0.27 mm (81.81% suppression) by 96 hours. This study has validated the folkloric use of the plant as an antitumor agent.

Abstract
The efficient execution of drilling operations hinges upon a comprehensive evaluation of surface facilities, encompassing an array of parameters and factors. This project delves into the intricate web of variables that influence drilling efficiency, wellbore stability, and equipment selection. Through meticulous analysis, it uncovers critical insights into mud weight control, pump displacement, pipe diameter considerations, and the deployment of solids control equipment such as desilters and desanders (hydrocyclone). These findings are poised to empower drilling engineers and operators with the knowledge needed to optimize surface facilities during drilling operations, ensuring a harmonious interplay of equipment, drilling fluid properties, and operational parameters. By bridging the gap between theory and practical application, this project not only contributes to the advancement of drilling engineering but also offers tangible recommendations to enhance drilling endeavours' efficiency, safety, and overall success

THE IMPACT OF TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT ON EMPLOYEES PERFORMANCE: A CASE STUDY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF BENIN, BENIN CITY.

Year of Publication
Publication Type
Abstract
his study focused on assessing the impact of training and development on employee performance, using the University of Benin as a case study. The objectives were to examine the roles of training and development in achieving organizational goals related to worker efficiency, effectiveness, social and psychological well-being, and the potential for changing attitudes towards work. The choice of the University of Benin was based on its extensive training and development opportunities, particularly for academic staff. The research employed both primary and secondary data collection methods. The study concluded that training and career development yield numerous benefits, including increased productivity, enhanced morale, improved profitability, optimized resource utilization, and reduced accidents. Scientific analysis revealed a strong positive relationship between training and productivity, indicating that employees acquire job skills effectively and contribute to organizational objectives. However, no statistically significant relationship was found between staff training and factors such as job satisfaction, promotion, or career advancement. Nevertheless, training serves as a motivating force, fostering positive attitudes towards the organization, better job adjustment, commitment, and potential for career growth. Based on the findings, it is recommended that effective training programs should be meticulously planned and structured, preferably under the guidance of trained experts. Organizations, including the University of Benin, should consider relevant information when developing tailored training programs that meet their specific needs. Establishing a well-defined training policy aligned with modern organizational requirements is crucial, with diligent implementation. Employee training should be based on accurate assessment systems and methods to identify training needs. The majority of respondents emphasized the importance of ongoing, job-relevant training. It is essential to ensure fairness and meritocracy in selecting trainees, providing equal access to training opportunities for all workers rather than a privileged few. To motivate employees, the management of the University of Benin and other organizations should complement training initiatives with additional benefits, such as promotions, higher salaries, and increased responsibilities, aimed at maximizing staff output. Lastly, allocating sufficient funds to support the training officer's duties, including staff training, is recommended for the University of Benin.
