Abstract
This study examines the relationship between unemployment in Nigeria and its impact on the academic performance of university students, with a particular focus on the University of Benin. The research investigates how high unemployment rates influence students’ motivation, academic choices, and overall performance, considering factors such as financial constraints, psychological stress, and perceptions of the labor market. Data were collected through the administration of structured questionnaires to a representative sample of students. Findings reveal that the persistent unemployment crisis contributes significantly to reduced academic motivation, increased anxiety about the future, and a tendency toward underperformance. The study further highlights the socio- economic pressures on students, such as inability to afford learning materials, reduced concentration in studies, and declining interest in certain disciplines perceived to have limited employment opportunities. It concludes that unemployment not only undermines students’ academic outcomes but also discourages investment in higher education. The research recommends stronger government intervention in job creation, career support programs in universities, and policies to better align academic curricula with labor market needs, thereby reducing the negative influence of unemployment on academic performance.

Abstract
This study investigated the causes and effects of premarital sex among undergraduate students in the University of Benin. In recent years, premarital sexual activities have become increasingly common among young people, particularly university students who are exposed to diverse social, cultural, and academic pressures. This growing trend raises concerns due to its potential implications on students’ health, emotional wellbeing, and academic performance. The study therefore sought to identify the major factors that influence students to engage in premarital sex and to examine its consequences on their overall adjustment within the university environment. The descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. The target population consisted of 270 undergraduate students residing in Ekosodin Community, from which the sample was selected. A structured questionnaire was the principal instrument for data collection, and it was validated by experts in measurement and evaluation. The reliability of the instrument was confirmed through statistical analysis. Data collected were analyzed using mean to answer
the research question, while simple linear regression and independent sample t-test were used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that premarital sex among undergraduates is influenced by multiple factors such as peer group pressure, curiosity and the desire for sexual experimentation, exposure to media and internet content, lack of
comprehensive sex education, family background and parenting style, socioeconomic challenges, and the influence of alcohol and drug use. Furthermore, the study established that premarital sexual activities have far reaching effects, including poor academic performance, health risks such as sexually transmitted infections and unplanned pregnancies, emotional and
psychological distress, social stigma, and long-term relationship difficulties. Based on these findings, the study recommends that parents, educators, school counsellors, and policy makers intensify efforts toward providing comprehensive sexual education both at home and in schools. It also recommends strengthening counselling services within the university to help students cope with emotional and psychological challenges. Creating awareness programmed that discourage risky sexual behavior and promoting value-based education among youths were also suggested as measures to reduce the prevalence of premarital sex among undergraduate students.

Abstract
This study investigates the perceived effect of internet use on the academic performance of secondary school students in Egor Local Government Area, Edo State, Nigeria. The research explores the relationship between internet use, including frequency, duration, and type of content accessed, and students' academic outcomes. A descriptive survey research design was employed, with 150 students from three randomly selected secondary schools as the study's sample. Data were collected through a self-structured questionnaire, which was validated and tested for reliability using Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient (0.81). The findings revealed a dual impact of internet use on students’ academic performance. Students reported that while educational internet use positively influenced their academic performance, excessive non-academic internet use, particularly social media and gaming, led to distractions and poor academic outcomes. Frequency of internet use for academic purposes was positively correlated with academic success, whereas long-duration internet use had both beneficial and detrimental effects. The study also
found that educational content, such as online forums and interactive learning platforms, contributed to improved academic performance, while entertainment content, such as social media and online gaming, negatively impacted students’ academic focus. Based on the findings, the study recommends that students be encouraged to use the internet primarily for educational purposes, with schools and parents working together to manage non-academic internet activities. Additionally, students should be taught effective time management and study habits to mitigate the negative effects of excessive internet use.
