Abstract
This research, titled Psychoanalyzing Resistant Female Characters in Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Dream Count and Bessie Head’s “Life,” explores the psychological workings of women who choose unconventional paths in the texts. It examines how the way of thinking and being, particularly within patriarchal contexts clashing with feminist liberation and choice, serves as a representation of resistant and unconscious drives. The analysis of Dream Count and “Life” reveals that the thoughts and actions of characters like Omelogor and Life, which may be seen as irrational, are not really “irrational” but are backed up by a psychological framework that prioritizes authenticity, truth, self and freedom. The study extends to the role that personal experiences play in shaping one’s psyche and deviant choices in life. Ultimately, this work underscores that deviance, whether in personality, characterisation or behaviour, is not merely a show-off, but a representation of desires and authenticity backed by psyche

HEALTH RISK IMPLICATIONS OF HEAVY METALS INTRODUCED DURING FOOD GRINDING

Food processing methods, particularly mechanical grinding, have been identified as potential sources of heavy metal contamination in daily diets. This study assessed the concentrations and health risks of heavy metals introduced into common Nigerian food items (tomato, pepper, melon, beans, groundnut, white and yellow corn, and crayfish) during grinding with various equipment types including blenders, milling machines, hand-crank grinders, mortars, and grinding stones. Heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Zn, Ni, Cd, and Pb) were analyzed using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS), and potential health risks were evaluated using Estimated Daily Intake (EDI) and Target Hazard Quotient (THQ) models. Results revealed elevated levels of essential metals such as Fe, Mn, and Zn, with concentrations highest in foods ground with older milling machines and mechanical grinders, reflecting increased leaching due to metallic wear. Toxic metals (Pb and Cd) were mostly below detection limits, indicating minimal immediate toxicity but potential for chronic accumulation. Fe showed the highest EDI (up to 5.35 mg/kg/day in hand-crank grinder samples), while THQ values exceeded 1.0 in several processed beans samples, suggesting possible non-carcinogenic risk upon prolonged exposure. Traditional grinding methods (mortar and pestle) exhibited significantly lower contamination levels compared to mechanical ones. These findings highlight that metal leaching from food processing equipment constitutes a significant but often overlooked route of dietary exposure to heavy metals in Nigeria.

RESOURCE MANAGEMENT IN THE THEATRE FOCUSING ON RECRUITMENT, RENTENTION AND TALENT MANAGEMENT IN UNIBEN THEATRE

This research work titled “Resource Management in the Theatre: Recruitment, Retention and Talent Management (A Focus on UNIBEN Theatre)” examines how human resource practices affect the effectiveness and sustainability of theatre production in the University of Benin Theatre Arts Department. The study was carried out to identify the strategies used in recruiting, retaining, and managing talents among theatre practitioners and students, as well as the challenges encountered in the process. The study adopted a survey research design, and data were collected through the use of structured questionnaires administered to 60 respondents consisting of academic staff, technical staff, and students of the department. Both purposive and simple random sampling techniques were used in selecting participants. The data collected were analyzed using simple percentages and presented in tables and charts. Findings revealed that while the UNIBEN Theatre has a fair recruitment process and a supportive learning environment, there are still notable gaps in employee motivation, career development opportunities, and recognition of talent. The study further showed that proper management of human resources plays a vital role in maintaining artistic quality, creativity, and productivity in theatre production. Based on the findings, the study recommends that the department should strengthen its recruitment policies, introduce regular staff and student development programs, and implement effective retention strategies that promote job satisfaction and professional growth.

ASSESSMENT OF SIMULATION BASED LEARNING AMONG UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS IN UNIVERSITY OF BENIN, BENIN CITY, EDO STATE.

Background: Simulation-based learning is essential for preparing and training undergraduate students for their professional roles and enhancing their experiences and skills. Simulation-based learning (SBL), however, has not been widespread, despite its integration in the university curriculum. There is a gap in understanding how undergraduate students perceive and engage with simulation base learning. Objective: This study aims to assess the knowledge, attitude and practice of simulation based learning among undergraduate students in university of Benin. Subjects and Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study design was utilized for this study using a self-administered questionnaire administered to 620 undergraduate students of university of Benin. Data collected was analyzed using IBM Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) 27.0. with statistical significance set at p<0.05 and 95% Confidence Interval. Categorical data was presented using frequency tables. Chi-square and Fischer’s Exact tests examined relationship between demographic characteristics and respondent’s knowledge, attitude, practice and challenges towards simulation-based learning. Results: The mean age and parity of respondents studied was 21.1 ± 3.1 years. In terms of sex, 54.8% of the respondents were male, and 45.2% were female. The tribal distribution of the respondents showed Benin (34.5%) with the highest proportion. Five hundred and twenty-five (84.7%) respondents were aware of simulation-based learning with 193 (36.7%) having good knowledge of SBL. Department and academic level were significant predictors of good SBL knowledge with respondents form Medicine and 600 level students showing a p-value of 0.042 and 1 respectively. In relation to attitude, 447 (85.1%) respondents had positive attitude towards simulation based learning while only 78 (14.9%) had negative attitude. Good knowledge and Academic level were significant predictors of attitude toward simulation-based learning with respondents from fourth-year having a coefficient of 0.836 with a p-value of 0.053, suggesting a near-significant positive influence on supportive attitudes, while respondents from sixth-year and respondents with good knowledge of SBL as reference category. In relation to practice, 53.9% (334) had participated in simulation-based learning activities, while 46.1% (286) had not. The academic level of study of respondents in their sixth year, good knowledge and attitude had a strong predictive value and significantly influenced participation of simulation-based learning. Conclusion: The study revealed that while awareness of simulation-based learning is high, over two-thirds of students showed limited understanding of its concepts, especially younger and less advanced students. Over four-fifths had a positive outlook on simulation-based learning, recognizing its value in enhancing knowledge and skills. Although more than half had participated in SBL activities, current engagement was lower, with only four-tenths actively involved. High-fidelity mannequins and virtual patients were commonly used, indicating a preference for realistic simulations. Notably, over one-fifth of respondents reported challenges, such as inadequate infrastructure, limited resources, technical issues, and time constraints, which hinder effective simulation-based learning implementation.

This study critically examines the challenges faced by African women in Abayomi Adebayo's Stay With Me and Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo's The Last of the Strong Ones. The research explores themes of patriarchy, infertility, polygamy, political exclusion, economic disenfranchisement, and the psychological trauma experienced by women within traditional and colonial African societies. Through the protagonist Yejide in Stay With Me, the study highlights the societal pressure placed on women to conform to gender expectations, particularly in marriage and motherhood, and the devastating consequences of infertility. Similarly, The Last of the Strong Ones presents a broader communal struggle, showcasing the collective.

Online Food Ordering System is database program that keeps record of all transaction carried out in the restaurant on daily bases. The aim of the study is to design and implement an Online Food Ordering System. In achieving this aim, the following objectives were laid out to determine how computerized management information system has facilitated increase productivity, decrease paperwork, and ability to analyze trouble spots. The motivation that led to the implementation of the proposed system is that the use of manual method in keeping information in the system. So among the numerous problems associated with the existing system are; staff are spending far too much time chasing mistakes instead of tending to customers, sales going unrecorded, inventory doesn’t match your tallies and other. The methodology adopted in this study is the object oriented analysis and design methodology (OOADM) which is a technical approach for analyzing and designing an application or system by applying object throughout the software development process. The programming language used is HTML, CSS, JAVASCRIPT, PHP, SQL and JQUERY. The reason why web programming languages was used is because, it is platform independent and it is a web based application. This study is significance because its conclusions would be useful to: Human Resources Managers in the hotel and restaurants business, the Federal, State and Local Government, scholars in the field of hotel and restaurant management. The expected result is an Online Food Ordering System that will focus on food ordering, food menu, and payment on food delivery.

This study examines the health-seeking behaviours of sexually abused teenagers in Uselu Community, Edo State, focusing on their access to medical, emotional, and mental health support. Utilizing a quantitative research design, data was collected through surveys distributed to a sample of 400 adolescents. The findings reveal significant barriers to seeking help, including stigma, financial constraints, limited healthcare access, and insufficient understanding among service providers regarding issues related to sexual abuse. While 50% of respondents expressed a willingness to seek medical assistance, an equal proportion reported reluctance, indicating the influence of cultural factors and a preference for informal emotional support. Notably, only 40% of the teenagers utilized counselling services, highlighting a critical gap in mental health engagement. The study also emphasizes the vital role of social workers in providing support and facilitating access to resources, underscoring their importance in community education and stigma reduction. Recommendations include improving healthcare access, implementing trauma-informed training for providers, increasing the availability of mental health resources, and expanding confidential support options. This study was designed to diagnose influence of mental toughness on the performance of student- athletes; in the university of Benin.. The purpose of the study was to investigate the influence of mental toughness on student- athletes; The study adopted survey research design. The study made use of questionnaire to obtain data from respondent. Five objectives were raised for the study. The study made use of questionnaire to obtain data from respondent. three objectives were raised for the study. The result showed that mental toughness significantly influences the performance of student-athletes. The study also showed a positive and statistically significant correlation implying that as mental toughness increases, so did performance indicators such as endurance, tactical execution, and competitive composure. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended among others that The University of Benin Sports Unit should formally integrate mental skills training into regular training programs for student-athletes. Techniques such as goal setting, visualization, positive self-talk, concentration drills, and stress-management strategies should be taught alongside physical and technical training to enhance mental toughness and overall athletic performance.

CHANGE MANAGEMENT AND PERFORMANCE WITHIN THE NIGERIAN MARITIME ADMINISTRATION AND SAFETY AGENCY

The study empirically examined change management and performance within the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency. To guide the study, three research questions were raised, and three hypothesis was generated. A survey research design which entails the use of structured questionnaire in sampling the opinion of the respondents on the subject was adopted in gathering data three. The Taro Yamane (1976) sample determination formula was used to determine the sample size from the population, and after due computation, a sample of 280 respondents was arrived at. A total of 280 questionnaires were distributed. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics, simple frequency count, percentages, and mean. Findings obtained from the analysis among other things, showed emotional readiness plays a crucial role in enhancing employee performance within the organization. It was concluded that successful change management in Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency depends largely on the extent to which employees are emotionally, cognitively, and intentionally prepared to engage with and sustain transformation processes, making readiness a critical determinant of organizational performance and long-term success Based on the findings, the study suggested that the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) should introduce regular emotional intelligence and stress management workshops to help employees develop resilience and adaptability during organisational change processes.
