Abstract
Free and fair elections are the genuine hallmark of democratic governments as they allow citizens to choose their representatives in governmental positions. As a democratic state, Nigeria has conducted well over eight General Elections since its severance from British hegemony in 1960. These elections conducted in 1999, 2003, 2007, 2011, 2015, 2019 and 2023, have all been
marred by severe electoral irregularities. Observers report that malpractices such as vote buying, ballot snatching/stuffing, electoral violence, and multiple registration/voting characterized these elections. Owing to the spate of these malfeasances, policymakers embarked on legislative reforms to consolidate the extant electoral laws. SubseqUent legislative revisions in 2010, 2015
and 2019 birthed the Electoral Act 2022 which was enacted on February 25, 2022. Broadly, the Act aimed to enhance the capacity of Electoral Management Bodies (EMBs) to conduct free and fair elections. The innovations pioneered by the Act abound thereby theoretically enhancing democratic consolidation in Nigeria through its 153 sections. As a disruptive legal framework, the Act legalized the deployment of technology in the conduct of elections under section 47 – 50. Further, it mandated the prompt release of funds to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct the elections. It also prohibited political appointees from acting as candidate/delegate in a primary election during the subsistence of their appointment. These
groundbreaking provisions were expected to radically reform electoral practice in Nigeria, solving the litany of problems plaguing the Nigerian electoral system. This, in turn, it was envisaged, would culminate in democratic consolidation and accord legitimacy to the emerging governments. However, in retrospect, these laudable aspirations and lofty expectations of the
Electoral Act 2022 were scarcely fulfilled. Almost two years after its enactment, the Nigerian electoral system is largely unchanged with electoral malpractices as prevalent as ever. The unforgettable 2023 Presidential elections and the petitions that followed brought to the fore, the issues that lay with the new Act. Likewise, the pockets of gubernatorial and legislative elections revealed certain gaps in the Act that were antithetical to democratic consolidation.

Abstract
Forest degradation remains a pressing environmental issue, threatening biodiversity and ecosystem functionality worldwide. This study evaluates tree seedling diversity and growth dynamics in a forest restoration site at the University of Benin, Benin City, Nigeria. The research aims to assess species composition, growth performance, and biodiversity indices within a designated 100m x 86m sample plot. Data collection involved identifying tree species, recording their abundance, and measuring key growth parameters, including height, number of leaves, number of branches, and collar girth. The study employed descriptive statistics and diversity indices such as Shannon-Wiener, Simpson’s, and Margalef’s indices, while growth data were analyzed using One-Way ANOVA in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD). A total of 194 trees, representing 28 species from 19 families, were recorded. Among these, 19 species regenerated naturally, while 9 were deliberately planted. The diversity analysis indicated that naturally regenerated species exhibited higher diversity indices (Hˡ = 2.813, D = 0.947, M = 4.195) compared to planted species, highlighting the significance of natural regeneration in enhancing biodiversity. Growth analysis revealed that Terminalia ivorensis demonstrated the highest growth rates across all measured parameters, while Entandrophragma cylindricuvvvvvvvvvvv m recorded the lowest performance. This study underscores the role of human activity in shaping forest regeneration outcomes. The findings suggest that deforestation and land-use change significantly impact species diversity, thereby affecting ecosystem stability. To promote effective forest restoration, it is recommended that reforestation efforts prioritize the selection of resilient native species, enhance conservation strategies, and conduct further research on the ecological factors
influencing seedling establishment and growth. These initiatives are essential for fostering long-term forest sustainability and biodiversity conservatio

Abstract
This study investigates the relationship between stress factors and academic achievement among University of Benin students. Recognizing stress as both a mental and physical response to perceived danger, the research aims to understand how various stressors impact students' academic performance. Building on the perspectives of Sharma, Parasar, and Mahto (2017), Yates (1979), and other scholars, the study explores the dual nature of stress, highlighting its potential to both motivate and hinder academic success. Specific institutional stressors such as overcrowded lecture halls, inadequate resources, excessivehomework, examinations, and peer competition, as identified by Decoste and Israel (2011), form the basis of this investigation. The study employs a convenience sampling method to survey fifty students across various faculties and departments within the university, due to financial and time constraints. Data collection involved self-administered questionnaires designed to capture comprehensive information on students' experiences with academic pressure, financial difficulties, and social support . Data analysis was conducted using E-Views software, employing regression analysis to assess the relationship between variables. Key findings highlight a significant correlation between academic pressure and GPA, the impact of financial difficulties on academic performance, and the role of social support in influencing academic success. These insights underscore the need for targetedinterventions and support systems to alleviate stress and enhance student well-being. The study's limitations, including reliance on self-reported data and a focus on a single university. Overall, this research contributes to academic knowledge by providing actionable recommendations for improving student support services and promoting a more supportive educational environment at the University of Benin. The findings aim to guide university administrators and policymakers in developing strategies to manage stress effectively, thereby fostering a conducive learning atmosphere that enhances students' academic achievements.
