DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND CHILDREN MENTAL HEALTH IN OREDO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract
This study examined Domestic Violence and Children’s Mental Health in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, Nigeria. The research was motivated by the growing concern over the rising cases of domestic violence and the increasing vulnerability of children who either directly experience abuse or witness violence within their homes. The study sought to examine the prevalence of domestic violence experienced by children, identify its major causes, assess its psychological and emotional effects on children’s mental health, evaluate the availability and effectiveness of support services, and determine the roles of social workers in addressing the problem. A survey research design was adopted for the study. The population comprised residents of selected communities within Oredo Local Government Area, including parents, caregivers, social workers, and children above the age of 12. A total of 100 respondents were selected using purposive and stratified sampling techniques. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies and percentages with the aid of SPSS.
Findings revealed that domestic violence is highly prevalent in the study area, with many children experiencing physical and emotional abuse or witnessing violence between caregivers. Major causes identified include poverty, substance abuse, family conflict, poor communication, and cultural norms that tolerate violence. The study further found that exposure to domestic violence significantly affects children’s mental health, leading to anxiety, fear, aggression, low self-esteem, depression, and poor academic performance. Although some mental health and support services exist, they are limited in accessibility and effectiveness. Social workers were found to play important roles in prevention, counseling, advocacy, and rehabilitation, though constrained by inadequate resources. The study concluded that domestic violence poses serious psychological and developmental risks to children in Oredo Local Government Area. It recommended increased public awareness, strengthening of child-focused mental health services, improved policy enforcement, and enhanced collaboration among stakeholders to protect children and promote their mental wellbeing.

RISK OF DRUG ABUSE AMONG YOUTH FROM DISADVANTAGED FAMILIES IN EKOSODIN COMMUNITY OVIA NORTH EAST LGA OF EDO STATE

The broad objective of this study is to examine the risk of drug abuse among youth from disadvantaged families in Ekosodin community Ovial North East Local Government Area of Edo State. The specific objectives are to assess the prevalence and patterns of substance use, highlight the psychological stress and mental health experienced by drug abuser, highlight the effect of drug abuse on Academic and Social Well-being, and to find out the effect of drug abuse among youth on disadvantaged families in Ekosodin community Ovial North East Local Government Area of Edo State. A total of 300 structured questionnaires were distributed to respondents. Frequency andpercentage method was adopted in this study. The finding showed that there are prevalence and patterns of substance use. Most youth become drug abuser because substance use is a common issue among people in the community. And this substance in most cases are abuse because it is easy for individuals to access substances if they wish to. Drug abuser experience psychological stress and mental health this includes feeling overwhelmed finding it difficult to manage emotions, feel isolated or alone, frequently experience feelings of anxiety or panic attacks, and increased mental health problems and finding it difficult to participate in healthy social activities. Drug abuse prevents abuser from engaging in activities they once enjoyed, leading to feelings of hopelessness, it cannegatively impacts academic performance of youth, harms relationships with family and friends, and reduces motivation for school and future goals. Drug abuse make abuser’s family experiences more arguments and conflict because of their drug use, and can make it harder for abuser to communicate openly and honestly with their parents/guardians. The study recommend that Nigeria government should work toward reducing easy access of most drug which could be harmful to the health of youth, this can be done through making a certain policy.

Abstract
This study examines the impact of parental influence on the engagement of youth in community development in Esan Central LGA, Edo State. Using a survey research method, this study employed a purposive sampling technique to select participants. The findings reveal the significant role of parental influence in shaping youth attitudes and behaviors towards community development. The study highlights the importance of parental values, beliefs, and practices in fostering a sense of social responsibility and civic engagement among young people. The implications of the findings are discussed, with recommendations for policymakers, practitioners, and community leaders seeking to promote youth engagement and community development.

Abstract
This study explores the intersection of social work, gender equality, and women's empowerment in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. It examines the role of social work in promoting gender equality and empowering women, highlighting the challenges and opportunities in this context. The study employs a Survey Research Design method of data collection. The findings reveal that social work interventions can significantly impact women's empowerment and gender equality, but face challenges such as cultural and societal norms, limited resources, and inadequate policy implementation. The study concludes that social work can play a vital role in promoting gender equality and women's empowerment in Benin City, and recommends increased investment in social work programs, policy reforms, and community engagement.

This study aims to assess the prevalence and correlates of substance abuse among youths in Benin City Edo State Nigeria. A qualitative approach was applied in the thesis and content analysis was undertaken. five objectives were raised for the study. The population of the study comprised of youths residing in Oredo local government area. The data generated from the survey were analyzed by means of tables and percentages. The result of the analysis was tested at 0.05 (5%) level of significance. The findings of the study show that drug abuse negatively influences youth behaviour. The study recommend that parents should make deliberate effort to instill high moral standard and ensure they monitor the kind of friends their children hang out with in the community, as doing so will help reduce drug abuse behaviour among.
