ECONOMICS OF OIL PALM SEEDLING PRODUCTION IN OVIA NORTH-EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, EDO STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract
Oil palm seedling production is a critical component of Nigeria’s agricultural economy, particularly in Edo State, where it supports rural livelihoods and contributes to national income. This study evaluated the economics of oil palm seedling production in Ovia North-East Local Government Area, Edo State, Nigeria. Specifically, it examined the socio-economic characteristics of producers, estimated production costs and returns, identified factors influencing revenue, and assessed constraints faced by farmers. A multi-stage sampling procedure was employed to select 100 respondents from five oil palm seedling-producing communities. Primary data were collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics, budgetary analysis, and multiple regression. Results revealed that the majority of producers were male (61%), middle-aged (50% aged 21–40 years), and educated (94% had at least primary education). The average household size was 5 members, and most farmers operated small-scale farms (55% cultivated 0.5–1 hectare). Total production cost averaged ₦401,867.27, with land rent (₦109,558.82) and fertilizer (₦55,655.13) as major expenses. The enterprise proved profitable, generating a gross margin of ₦588,325.60 and a return on investment (ROI) of 1.464. Regression analysis indicated that seed cost (r = 4.65, p < 0.001) and fertilizer cost (r = 4.85, p < 0.001) significantly enhanced revenue, explaining 61.5% of variability (R² = 0.615). Key constraints included inadequate finance (100% of respondents), high transportation costs (99%), irregular input supply (99%), labor shortages (98%), and land tenure issues (99%).

Abstract
This study examines the influence of poverty on the academic performance of secondary School students in some selected schools in Ovia North-East Local Government Area, Edo State. The research aims to identify the relationship between poverty and students’ academic performance. The research was carried out as a survey using relevant literature from journals, textbooks, magazine and the internet. To achieve the purpose of the study, three research questions were raised. The sample size of fifty secondary school teachers from five secondary schools was used for the study. Data was collected with the aid of well- structured and valid questionnaire; the data collected were analyzed using simple percentages. The findings showed that there is a significant relationships between academic performance and poverty under feeding conditions, provision of school facilities and equipment and home related factors .The study inferred that poverty affects academic performance of students and the day to day management of the school. From the study it is evident that parents do not have stable sources of income as they don’t pay fees in time. This negatively influences students’ academic performance.

PREVALENCE, CAUSES AND IMPACT OF CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IN EKOSODIN COMMUNITY, OVIA NORTH-EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA

This research examined the prevalence, root causes, and consequences of child sexual abuse within the Ekosodin Community, Ovia North East Local Government Area. A sample of 320 young individuals was selected using a simple random sampling technique from five streets within the Ekosodin Community. The research objectives were developed and tested using structured questionnaires validated through content validity employing the expert judgment approach. Findings revealed that child sexual abuse incidents frequently occur in isolated settings, such as when children are alone, during nighttime, and outside their homes. The study also revealed a lack of awareness and knowledge about child sexual abuse within impoverished communities that increases the risk of abuse. Furthermore, the research found that traditional norms assigning blame to female victims significantly impact the prevalence of child sexual abuse, and participants agreed on the negative consequences of unhealthy relationships with children. The recommendations of this study include raising awareness of the prevalence and impact of child sexual abuse in the Ekosodin Community, strengthening child protection systems, addressing the root causes of abuse, providing support services to survivors, and eliminating stigmatization and victim blaming.

This study examined parental attitudes toward participation in adult education programmes in Ovia North-East. The findings showed that parents attitudes strongly influence participation in adult education programme. This is possibly due to the fact that many parents lacked understanding of adult education programme and the benefits it bestows on that participants. The factors found to influence parental attitudes include finance, limited awareness and the distance where programme are located. The aim was to explore and determine the disposition of parent to participation in adult education programmes in the area understudy. In this regard the research sought to explore the parent perception of their children's participation in adult education, it's influence on their choice of programmes and factors guiding the parents disposition and perception. In pursuance of this, 6 research questions were raised to examined in the course of the study

Abstract
This study examined the influence of the learning environment on the teaching and
learning of Business Studies in secondary schools within Ovia North-East Local
Government Area of Edo State. Employing a descriptive survey design, data was
collected using structured questionnaires from junior secondary school teachers and
students (JSS III) in four purposively selected secondary schools. The study examined the
extent of influence of physical facilities, classroom settings, school locations, and the
availability of qualified teachers on teaching and learning of Business Studies. The data
analysis utilized mean and standard deviation calculations, with a decision rule based on
a mean value of 2.50. The findings demonstrated the significant impact of various factors on teaching and learning. The availability and accessibility of modern educational
resources, current textbooks, and computers were perceived to have a high extent of
influence, contributing to enhanced educational outcomes. Well-maintained classrooms, laboratories, and physical school buildings were found to play a pivotal role in creating
conducive learning environments, with consensus among respondents regarding their
positive impact. Classroom settings, including classroom size, space, and seating
arrangements, were also acknowledged as influential, although with moderate variability
in viewpoints. Furthermore, school locations, particularly their proximity to
marketplaces and busy roads, were considered to have a considerable influence, with an
emphasis on the safety and well-being of students and teachers. The presence of qualified teachers with teaching experience, creative knowledge, motivational skills, and versatile teaching methods was found to significantly enhance teaching and learning. In
conclusion, this study underscores the multifaceted nature of factors influencing the
teaching and learning of Business Studies. The recommendations include enhancing
educational resources, maintaining physical infrastructure, ensuring safe school
locations, supporting teacher development, integrating multimedia tools into the
curriculum, and considering these influences in educational policy formulation.

Abstract
The study was designed to investigate the Influence of Literacy on
Pupils Performance in Primary Schools in Ovia North-East Local
Government Area of Edo State. Three research questions and three research
hypothesis were also generated. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for this study. The population of this study consisted of the primary school pupils in the ninetyfive (95) public primary schools in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State where two hundred and fifty (250) primary school pupils were randomly selected from five (5) schools through the purposive sampling techniques. The YES or NO questionnaire was used while tables and simple percentages were used as method of data analysis. The findings of the study revealed that pupils in primary schools in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State are non-literates, that the ability of pupils to read and write significantly influence their academic performance in primary
schools in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State and that the total number of primary school pupils in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State who can read and write are not more than pupils who cannot read and write. Based on the above findings, recommendations were made.
