FACTORS RESPONSIBLE FOR CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN OREDO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE

Abstract
This study is on factors responsible for child abuse and neglect among secondary school students in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo state. The total population for the study is 200 students of Oredo local government of Edo state. The researcher used questionnaires as the instrument for the data collection. The data collected were presented in tables and analyzed using simple percentages and frequencies The major instrument used for this study was the questionnaire. The questionnaire was designed and validated by experts in the department of curriculum and instructional technology, faculty of education, university of Benin, Benin City, Edo state. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistical techniques such as tables, frequencies counts, and simple percentage. Findings of the study reveals that most children with single parent are vulnerable to sexual abuse, they are also likely to have issues with their relationship in future. It was also reveal that parent’s poor standard of living can cause harm to a child’s mental development. It was recommended that voluntary organization for the prevention and protection against child abuse should periodically organize in-house seminars, workshop and other educative programs in villages, quarters to enlighten parents and children on the dangers of child street hawking and other forms of child abuse.

THE ROLE OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT IN RURAL INFRASTRUCTURAL DEVELOPMENT: A STUDY OF EGOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE

The study was designed to examine the role of Local Government in Rural Infrastructural Development: A Study of Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. The objectives of the study include the following: to examine the roles of Egor Local Government Area in road infrastructural development, to investigate the impact of skilled workers in road infrastructural development in Egor Local Government Area, to ascertain if the issue of funding affects road infrastructural development in Egor Local Government Area, and to proffer necessary recommendations to the issues of infrastructural development in Egor Local Government Area. The study adopted survey research design. The Population of this study is drawn from all the communities that make-up the Egor local government. These communities includes the following among many; Agidigbi Camp, Egor, Oghedaivbiobaa, Oghokhugbo, Ugbighoko, Urunmwon, and Uwelu. The total number of population of these communities as reviewed by the 2006 census figure is 339,899 (National Population Census, 2023). In getting the sample size for the study the Taro Yamane sampling size technique was adopted. Furthermore, the simple random sampling techniques was used in selecting the respondent in the local government especially those that have direct bearing with the impact of road construction to community development within the context of Egor Local Government Area, Edo State. The instrument used for the collection of data was the questionnaire which was administered to the study sampled respondents. The study discovered amongst others that Egor Local Government Council do contribute to some extent to road infrastructural development of its rural areas. Furthermore, policy recommendations were adopted which include amongst others that there is need for the council to procure tractors and other machineries that will help in the maintenance of road in Egor Local Government Area.

ECONOMICS OF CONCRETE POND CATFISH PRODUCTION IN OVIA NORTH EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE, NIGERIA

The catfish industry in Nigeria faces significant challenges including high production cost, low productivity, and limited profitability. Despite its potential, the industry has not fully explored the use of concrete pond for catfish production which could improve efficiency and reduce costs. This study investigated the socio-economic characteristics, profitability, and technical and allocative efficiency of concrete pond catfish production in the Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State, Nigeria, and identified key constraints faced by farmers. Data were collected from 113 concrete pond catfish farmers and analyzed using descriptive statistics, net profit analysis, and the Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA) model.

The study investigated the factors responsible for students’ academic performance in public secondary schools.The population for this study consists of all public secondary school students in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. Out of the twenty-four public secondary schools in Oredo Local Government, eight secondary schools were selected for the study.This represents 33.3% of the total secondary schools in the local government. In each of the selected school, twenty students and five teachers were randomly selected to make a total number of two hundred (200) respondents. A simple random sampling technique was used to select the respondents. The instrument for the study was questionnaire, titled Assessment of factor responsible for students’ academic performance in public secondary schools’ questionnaire. (ASAPQ).Findings revealed that human resources, financial resource, physical resource and learning techniques influence students’ academic performance in public secondary schools. It was therefore recommended that subject teachers’ pre-service and in-service training must be encouraged and funded. Some innovative teaching methods and instructional strategies combined with new technologies to enhance effective and efficient teaching and learning

Job Stress, Presenteeism and Employee Performance among Academic Staff in Selected Universities in Edo State

This study examined the effect of job stress on employee performance with the moderating role of presenteeism among academic staff in selected universities in Edo State. Specifically, the study investigated the effect of excessive workload, student-related challenges, career development, compensation and organisational support on employee performance. A survey research design was adopted. The population of the study comprised all academic staff members in the four selected universities in Edo State. The sample size comprised 356 academic staff from selected universities; however, 313 valid responses (87.9%) were obtained from the survey instrumentand used for data analyses. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation, regression analysis, and moderation tests with SPSS. Hypotheses were tested at 5% level of significance. The study found that while excessive workload negatively but insignificantly affected employee performance, student-related challenges significantly reduced it. In contrast, career development and organisational support have positive and significant influence on employee performance. The results also showed that compensation has a positive but non-significant effect with employee performance. Presenteeism moderates the relationship between the job stress dimensions and employee performance. It is recommended that University management should adopt workload management frameworks to ensure fair distribution of teaching, administrative, and research responsibilities. Hiring additional academic staff and using technology for administrative tasks could help reduce the burden on current staff.

EFFECTS OF SPEED FM PIDGIN ENGLISH BROADCASTING ON BENIN RESIDENTS,EDO STATE

This study, which evaluated the Effects of Speed FM's Pidgin English Language Broadcasting on Benin Residents Edo state, was anchored on the tenets of the Information Processing theory. The survey design was adopted, with a 14-item questionnaire to elicit data from 400 respondents selected from the total population of 1,781,999 residents of Benin City through purposive sampling technique. Data obtained were presented and analyzed with the aid of frequency tables and simple percentages. Findings revealed that most residents of Benin are actually exposed to Speed FM's broadcast Also, the extent ofexposure they have to Speed FM's Pidgin English programmes and how regularly they have access to it is high. It was also discovered that the residents of Benin City are drawn to the socio economic issues of Benin City through Speed FM's broadcast. Therefore, the study concludes that Speed FM appeals to majority of Benin residents and majority of the residents see their broadcast as interpretative and educative. It was however recommended that Broadcast journalists should engage in interpretative and investigative journalism and that more grass root radio stations should be established for citizens from the lowest rung of the social ladder to also have access to information,entertainment and education throigh the broadcast media

PROFICIENT UTILIZATION OF PEDAGOGICAL INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY SKILLS AND PERCEIVED BUSINESS EDUCATORS’ JOB PERFORMANCE IN COLLEGES OF EDUCATION IN NIGERIA

This study examined Proficient Utilization of Pedagogical Information and Communication Technology skills and perceived business educators’ job performance in Colleges of Education in Edo and Delta States, Nigeria. To guide the study, ten (10) research questions were raised and three answered while eight hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study adopted survey research of correlational design. The population of the study was 107 Business Educators in colleges of education in Edo and Delta States of Nigeria. The sample size was 107 business educators hence a census. The research instrument used was a structured questionnaire titled “Proficient utilization of pedagogical Information and Communication Technology skills and perceived business educators’ job performance in Colleges of Education in Edo and Delta States (PUPBEJP)”. The instrumentwas segmented into two parts: A and B. Part A dealt with the bio-data of the respondents such as location of institution and gender, while Part B was made up of 60 item statements sub-segmented into eight (8) clusters with Sections A and B. Section A had three clusters with 32 items measuring level of Proficiency on pedagogical ICT skills, level of utilization of pedagogical ICT skills and job performance of business educators while Section B measured 28 items on proficiency and utilization of CAL/CAI, CMI, CBI, CBT and CAD and they were rated on four point rating scale. The instrument was validated by five experts: the researcher’s supervisors, two (2) other experts from the Faculty of Vocational and Technical Education and one psychometrician from the Department of Educational Evaluation and Counseling Psychology (EECP), University of Benin, Benin-City. The instrument was pilot tested once on twenty business educators’ in Federal College of Education, Omoku, Rivers State who were not part of the population of the xii study. Alpha value of 0.94 was obtained for proficiency and utilization of pedagogical ICT skills and 0.74 was obtained for business educators’ job performance. Data collected from the respondents were analyzed using Mean, Standard Deviation, Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient, Multiple regression analysis and Fisher z. The Mean and Standard Deviation were used to answer the research questions while Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient, Multiple regression analysis and Fisher z were used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that the level of proficiency of pedagogical ICT skills possessed by business educators was high. The findings equally revealed that proficient utilization of pedagogical ICT skills significantly predicted the job performance of business educators. It was concluded that there was a significant relationship between business educators’ proficient utilization of pedagogical ICT skills and their job performance in colleges of education in Edo and Delta States. Based on the findings and conclusion, recommendations were proffered among others that management of colleges of education should sustain, maintain and promote the highlevels of proficiency, utilization and job performance among business educators through continuous professional development.

The Usefulness of radio,borders on its ability to cause positive change in the society. The study was centered on the evaluation of Radio in creating environmental awareness and waste management. The study was anchored on the Planned Behavior Theory. It further employed a quantitative survey method and adopted the positive sampling techniques; questionnaire was used to collect data which were presented and analyzed in some frequency tables and percentages. Findings reveal that radio station within its features of sound is capable of influencing and inducing responsible environmental behaviour. But then, it cannot compel people to change but can set the agenda for change. Also, the environmental waste problem can be best managed by modifications of human behavioural patterns by developing responsible environmental behaviour. The study concludes that Waste management is one of the greatest environmental challenges facing us in this country, Nigeria. The researcher therefore recommends that radio station should conduct regular enlightenment and sensitization on environmental issues,recycling of waste there should be a strict enforcement of environmental policies and laws.

The study examined on perception of Netizens on cross gender issues: a study of Mass Communication students of the University of Benin, (UNIBEN), Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. The objectives of the study were to ascertain the awareness level of students of Mass Communication of (UNIBEN), University of Benin, Edo State, Nigeria, about cross-gender issues, examines the role of social media in constructing perceptions of cross-gender issues among university students. Premised on the Framing and Uses and Gratifications Theories, the researcher adopted the survey research method to gather data for the study. The major findings of the research revealed that there is high level of awareness about cross gender issues among students of Mass Communication, UNIBEN. Base on the findings, the research concluded that the awareness level of students of Mass Communication of the university of Benin about cross gender issues is high. The researcher therefore recommended among other things that there should be need to promote media literacy education among students, there should be peer education program where students can educate one another and learn from each other regarding issues of gender identities and being inclusive. The researcher also recommended that there should be curriculum inclusion of gender identity, diversity and inclusiveness within the course structure of mass communication.

This study examined the record management practices and challenges in public secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State.Seven research questions was raised to guide this study. The population for this research consists of all the principals in the 13 public senior secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State.The 13 principal will be automatically adopted as the sample population given the fact that it is researchable. No sampling technique is used to select the 13 principals in the 13 public senior secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. The analysis of the data produced the following findings That the predominant record management practices in Egor LGA secondary schools are generally high, leaning toward modern and organized approache that the challenges in managing school records are generally high and require strategic attention, especially in areas of staff training and infrastructure development.Urban schools appear to have an advantage in terms of digital access and support, while rural schools continue to struggle with staffing and logistical issues, the following recommendations are offered:There should be a clear, LGA- wide records management policy for all schools that standardizes file classification, indexing, retention and disposal schedules, privacy rules, and access controls, with principals held accountable for compliance.There should be continuous capacity building for records officers and administrative staff, including practical training on basic records lifecycle, digital filing, data protection, and use of simple database or spreadsheet tools.There should be phased digitization of core records such as admission, attendance, assessment, transfers, and staff records, with secure
backups, off-site storage, and a routine for verifying data quality.
