DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF A WEB BASED COURSE MATERIAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR ENGINEERING STUDENTS IN THE UNIVERSITY OF BENIN

Year of Publication
Publication Type
Abstract
This project aimed to design and implement UnibenEngVault, a web-based platform created to provide engineering students of the University of Benin with centralized and convenient access to academic resources such as lecture notes, past questions, and tutorial materials. The initiative was motivated by the persistent difficulty students face in sourcing relevant study materials dueto the lack of a unified and structured digital repository within the Faculty of Engineering. The development followed a structured methodology consisting of project planning and approval, problem analysis, system design, development, and deployment. The UI/UX design was created using Figma to ensure an intuitive and visually appealing interface. The frontend was developed with ReactJS, while the backend was implemented using Python (Flask) and PostgreSQL for database management. AWS S3 was utilized for cloud storage, and deployment was achieved through Docker, GitHub Actions (CI/CD), and DigitalOcean Droplets to ensure scalability and reliability. Security measures such as session authentication, CORS configuration, and bcrypt password hashing were implemented, alongside thorough unit, integration, and user testing. The final outcome is a secure, functional, and user-friendly platform that enables students to easily access department- and level-specific academic materials. UnibenEngVault enhances academic collaboration, improves resource accessibility, and provides a sustainable technological solution to the long-standing challenge of academic material distribution within the Faculty of Engineering

Abstract
This study was carried out to determine the influence of home management residency on selected home economicsundergraduates’selected home management practices in University of Benin. Five research questions were raised and answered. The descriptive survey research design was adopted for this study. The research instrument used for this study was the structured questionnaire which was administered to the respondents. The questionnaire was administered to respondents by the researcher, aided by trained research assistants who were thoroughly briefed on the administration procedure. The assistants facilitated the distribution and collection of the questionnaires from the respondents. Upon completion, each questionnaire was reviewed to ensure a high level of completeness. Notably, the response rate was 100%, indicating successful data collection process. For reliability of the instrument, Cronbach alpha statistics was used to ascertain the internal consistency of the item. It yielded an alpha value of 0.81 which indicated that the instrument was reliable. Data was analysed using mean and standard deviation as the method of data analysis. It was revealed from the finding that home management promoted enhancement of decision-making abilities, Improvement of resource allocation skills andDevelopment of leadership capabilities. Students who completed a residency practicum in home management reported increased confidence, self-ef icacy, and professionalism. Home management residency practicum influences students’ performances in overall home arrangements and organization to a high extent. It was concluded that home management residency practicum significantly influenced practical skills development, decision-making abilities, and overall professional preparation of selected home economics undergraduatestudents of University of Benin. In other words, home management residency practicum helps to inculcate requisite skills that promote entrepreneurial opportunities for home economics graduates. It was recommended that School management should invest on infrastructural facilities in the residency that promote ef ective skill acquisition. Students should engage in financial prudency for ef ective home management. Home management residency should be well organized to facilitate ef ective meal planning and preparation. The residency should be well equipped with necessary home accessories that will enhance student’s household chores

Abstract
Background: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a leading cause of pain, disability, and
reduced quality of life worldwide. Despite evidence supporting the benefits of physical activity (PA) in managing KOA, many patients remain inactive. Identifying predictors of PA among this population is essential for developing tailored interventions.
Aim: This study investigated the predictors of physical activity levels among patients with knee osteoarthritis attending the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 36 participants diagnosed with KOA. Respondents were selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected on socio-demographic (age, sex, education), clinical (pain severity, duration of symptoms, comorbidities), and psychological variables (kinesiophobia, anxiety, depression). Instruments included the International Physical Activity Questionnaire–Short Form (IPAQ-SF), Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TSK), and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Descriptive and inferential statistics were applied, including Chi-square tests and ordinal logistic regression, with significance set at p<0.05.
Results: About half of the respondents (50%) had moderate PA, while smaller
proportions had low (11.1%) or high (38.9%) PA levels. Most patients reported high kinesiophobia, and mild symptoms of anxiety and depression. Anxiety showed a significant association with PA (P < 0.001), whereas socio-demographic, clinical, and other psychological factors were not significantly related. Regression analysis showed that none of the variables independently predicted PA levels.
Conclusion: Most patients with KOA were moderately active despite reporting high levels of kinesiophobia. Anxiety was related to PA but was not an independent predictor. Overall, PA appears to be influenced by multiple interacting factors, highlighting the need for holistic management strategies that address both physical and psychological aspects.

PREVALENCE AND PATTERN DISTRIBUTION OF PTERYGIUM AMONG COMMERCIAL BUS DRIVERS IN BENIN METROPOLIS

Year of Publication
Publication Type
Abstract
A pterygium is a wing shaped hyperplastic and fibrovascular growth of the conjunctiva encroaching onto the cornea. Cell apoptosis and cell proliferation processes are strongly associated with the development and progression of pterygium. Esthetic concerns, irregular astigmatism, decreased vision and blindness are important issues associated with this condition if left untreated. Commercial motorcyclists in Benin City, Nigeria, have been found to have a high prevalence of pterygium. There has been a dearth of information about pterygium prevalence among commercial bus drivers in Benin Metropolis. This research paper seeks to highlight the prevalence, severity and pattern distribution of pterygium among this group. A total of one hundred and twenty two (122) commercial bus drivers with one to five years driving experience in Benin Metropolis was included in the study. A questionnaire which was divided into two parts A and B was administered to the subjects. Visual acuity was measured using the Snellen's literate and Tumbling letter "E' chart under standard testing conditions in order to determine the level of vision and for legal purposes. Penlight was used for external examination to determine the position and extent of pterygium
