Abstract
The researcher examined Benin residents Perception of the Influence of Social Media in the Promotion of Separation and Divorce among couples in Nigeria. The main objective of the study is to examine the Perception of Benin resident on the extent social media influence the rate of separation and divorce among couple in Nigeria. Premise on the Technological Determinism Theory, the researcher adopted the Survey research method. The researcher surveyed 400 respondents using 5 point Lirket (5) scale questionnaire as instrument for data collection. Findings reveals that majority of couples in Nigeria have phone gadget, have access to social media platforms, spend more than quarter of their day on social media and it contribute greatly to the rate of separation and divorce. The researcher concludes that Social media can be dangerous to a romantic relationship if its use are not properly defined. Based on the conclusion, the researcher recommended that Government should come with policies that will regulate social media utilization in Nigeria, couples should use the social media for a pre-defined purpose and couples should regulate one another and serve as “policeman”.
