FISH PRESERVATION; CONSUMERS ACCEPTANCE OF FRESH AND SMOKED FISH IN BENIN CITY

Year of Publication

Abstract
Fish is a vital source of dietary protein for many Nigerians, but domestic production has not kept pace with population growth, leading to increased reliance on imports. Traditional preservation methods like smoking play a key role in ensuring year-round availability, but also raise concerns around contaminants and health risks. This study investigates consumer preferences and perceptions regarding fresh versus smoked fish in Benin City, Nigeria. The background highlights that fish is highly perishable, requiring techniques like drying, smoking, freezing, and brining to extend shelf life. Smoking remains the dominant preservation method in Nigeria, offering benefits in accessibility and shelf-life, but also potential quality and safety issues. Limited research has explored consumer choices between fresh and smoked fish products, especially in inland urban areas. This study assesses the extent to which cultural, economic, and health/safety factors influence consumer preferences for fresh versus smoked fish. It also identifies key demographic segments and their buying behaviors. Surveys will be conducted with fish consumers at major markets and the university community in Benin City. The findings can provide important insights to help the fishing industry, retailers, and policymakers better meet evolving consumer demand for fresh and processed fish products in Nigeria.

TEACHERS' PERCEPTION OF PLAY AS A LEARNING STRATEGY FOR SKIL L DEVELOPMENT IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION IN OREDO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, EDO STATE

Abstract
This study examined teachers’ perception of play as a learning strategy for skill development in early childhood education in Oredo Local Government Area. The purpose of the study was to determine how teachers view the use of play-based activities in promoting cognitive, social, and physical skills among young learners. Early childhood education emphasizes interactive and engaging learning methods, and play has been widely recognized as an effective instructional strategy that supports holistic child development.

A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. Data were collected from teachers involved in early childhood education through the use of structured questionnaires. The responses were analyzed to determine teachers’ attitudes, level of awareness, and the extent to which play is integrated into classroom teaching. The findings revealed that most teachers perceive play as an important and effective strategy for enhancing children’s creativity, problem-solving ability, social interaction, and motor skill development.

However, the study also identified some challenges affecting the effective use of play in teaching, including limited instructional materials, time constraints, and inadequate training on play-based teaching methods. The study concludes that play is a valuable educational tool that contributes significantly to skill development in early childhood learners. It therefore recommends that teachers should be encouraged and adequately trained to incorporate play-based learning strategies in their classrooms to improve the overall quality of early childhood education.

FEED AND WATER CONSUMPTION PATTERNS OF RABBITS DURING THE DAY AND AT NIGHT

Abstract
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Rabbits have a distinctive feeding behaviour that sets them apart from other mammals. This is due to their unusual digestive physiology, which falls between that of monozastric and herbivorous animals. Being herbivores, their eating technique differs significantly from that of ruminants. Rabbits are classified within the Lagomorpha order, specifically the Leporidae family, which encompasses both rabbits and hares (Grassé & Dekeuser, 2015). Although rabbits exhibit certain behaviours similar to rodents, such as chewing, they are not categorised as rodents. The majority of our comprehension on rabbit feeding behaviour is derived from research conducted on domestic rabbits, who are commonly bred for meat, fur, or as subjects in laboratory experiments. These trials frequently entail rabbits being provided with some well-balanced, complete pelleted feed ad libitum, occasionally supplemented with dry forages or straw, but typically without a genuine unrestricted selection of food. A distinctive characteristic of rabbit eating behaviour is caecotrophy, a process in which rabbits excrete and promptly consume specialised soft faeces known as "caecotrophes". As a consequence, rabbits consume two distinct forms of food: feeds and caecotrophes. Caecotrophes are produced by holding food particles in the fermentative section (caecum and proximal colon) until they become sufficiently tiny in size. Contrary to ruminants, rabbits employ a different approach by prioritising

Abstract
The purpose of this research was to examine how middle and high school students in the Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State might benefit from maths classes in order to hone their entrepreneurial abilities. In the Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, two hundred and fifty (250) pupils were chosen at random from one public school and four private institutions. A total of twenty-five (25) questionnaire items were developed to address the five (5) research topics that were posed to direct the study. A questionnaire titled "The relevance of Mathematics education in the development of entrepreneurial skills in senior secondary schools" was utilised as the research instrument for the study. The data collected was analysed using the following statistical methods: frequency count, mean, standard deviation, and t-test. Out of the 250 copies issued, 247 questionnaires were returned. According to the research, students in senior secondary schools can benefit from developing their entrepreneurial skills through exposure to mathematics. Mathematical concepts such as basic operations (+, -, ÷, Ï), ratio and proportion calculations, interest (simple and compound), profit and loss, discount and commission, percentages and fractions, and the ability to organise business activities and time, estimate production costs, and solve everyday problems related to business transactions are all part of this curriculum. The results supported the need for regular and comprehensive math education across all grade levels; moreover, it was determined that students would benefit greatly from having access to experienced math educators who could guide them in developing the problem-solving and managerial abilities essential to entrepreneurship.

Abstract
The world Health Organization (WHO (2008) defined environmental sanitation as the control of all those factors in man’s physical environment, which exercise or may exercise a deleterious effect on his physical development, health and survival. Environmental sanitation is a conventional actions or an essential process of collecting and safely disposing all kinds of waste within the environment with the intention of protecting and promoting the individual health and quality of life of communities. Environmental sanitation generally includes the provision of facilities and services for the safe disposal of waste, the maintenance of hygienic conditions and the prevention of diseases (WHO,2017). Adequate environmental sanitation practices remains a panaceat of public health intervention that is essential for social and economic development especially in developing countries like Nigeria. Environmental sanitation practice is a frontrunner to the enhancement or development of health, well-being and economic productivity and benefits the individual, household and community should enjoy (WHO)(2004)and Mara, Lane, Scott, and Trouba(2010)

Abstract
Tetrapleura tetraptera (Schum. and Thonn) Taub, is a leguminous multipurpose tree (Mimosoideae) indigenous to tropical Africa. The plant has long medicinal significance as a molluscide, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory agent. This study evaluated the effect of Tetrapleura tetraptera saponins on cardiac histology of Streptozotocin diabetic Wistar rats. Saponin fraction of T. tetraptera stem bark was orally administered to streptozotocin (STZ) diabetic rats at 10, 20 and 40mg/kg body weight (Group 4, 5 and 6). The effect of saponins on cardiac histology of the treated diabetic rats were compared with untreated control rats (Group 1), untreated diabetic control rats (Group 2) and metformin treated diabetic rats (Group 3) after 12 weeks of treatment. Treatment with graded doses of Tetrapleura tetraptera saponins and standard drug metformin resolved the lesions remarkably in the heart tissue with 20mg/kg body weight extract comparing favorably with metformin. There was an additional beneficial effect of vasodilation and increase in blood flow by the extract. The results from this study revealed that Tetrapleura tetraptera saponins ameliorated Streptozotocin induced pathology of heart tissues and may have resolved the lesions remarkably in the heart, with 20mg/kg body weight dose proving to have the best therapeutic effect.
