This study investigated the influence of domestic violence on students’ academic
performance among undergraduates of the University of Benin, Edo State, Nigeria. The
research was motivated by growing concerns over how various forms of domestic
violence physical, emotional, sexual, verbal, and economic affect students’ concentration, motivation, and overall academic success. The study adopted a descriptive survey design using a structured questionnaire administered to 100 randomly selected undergraduate students across different faculties and academic levels. Data were analyzed using simple percentages and frequency tables. Findings revealed that domestic violence is prevalent among university students, with emotional and physical abuse being the most common forms experienced. The results further indicated that exposure to domestic violence significantly impairs students’ academic performance by reducing concentration, increasing absenteeism, and leading to emotional distress, poor grades, and loss of motivation. It was also observed that female students and those from low-income or traditional family backgrounds are more vulnerable to domestic violence compared to their counterparts. The study found that demographic factors such as gender, socio-economic status, and cultural norms influence both the occurrence and reporting of violence. Furthermore, the study highlighted the critical role of social workers in addressing
domestic violence through counseling, advocacy, awareness creation, and policy
intervention. It concluded that domestic violence not only threatens students’ emotional
and psychological well-being but also undermines academic performance and social
development. Based on these findings, the study recommended that the University of Benin and other
higher institutions should establish functional counseling and social work units, conduct
regular awareness and sensitization programs, enforce anti-violence policies, and provide
economic empowerment opportunities for vulnerable students. The study contributes to
the growing body of knowledge by emphasizing that domestic violence is not only a
social problem but also an educational challenge that requires a multidisciplinary
response involving educators, policymakers, and social work professionals.

This study examined the impact ofpoverty on family dynamics in selected households in Egor Local Government Area Edo State. Specifically examine the relationship between poverty and patterns ofinteractions among relatives, ofind out ifthere is a relationship between poverty and roles and relationships, to evaluate ifa relationship exists between poverty and various factors that shapefamily member interactions, examine ifthere is a poverty can foster greater reliance and cooperation amongfamily members as they collectively navigate economic challenges, and alsofind out the effectiveness ofgovernmentprogram thatfocus on reducepoverty rate in Nigeria.Questionnaire was used as instrument of data collection. The sample size of the study will be approximately 400 consisting ofboth male andfemale adult living in EgorLocal GovernmentArea.The major finding showed that poverty has significant impact on family dynamics in selected households in Egor Local GovernmentArea Edo State. In analysing the respondent opinion it was also discovered that there is a relationship between poverty andpatterns ofinteractions among relatives, there is a relationship between poverty and roles and relationships, a relationship was found between poverty and various factors that shape family member interactions, poverty can foster greater reliance and cooperation among family members as they collectively navigate economic challenges. Respondent revealed that governmentprogram on poverty eradication are not effective in reducing poverty rate in Nigeria. The study recommend that Nigeria should increase their effort toward poverty reduction program which could in turn reduce the issue among relative in Nigeria.

This study investigates the impact of depression on adolescents and explores the role of school social workers in addressing this mental health issue in secondary schools within Egor Local Government Area (LGA) of Edo State, Nigeria. Depression among adolescents has become a growing concern due to its adverse effects on academic performance, behavior, and social relationships. The objectives of the study were to determine the prevalence of depression among adolescents, identify its major causes, and examine the availability and effectiveness of school social workers in managing students' mental health challenges. A descriptive survey research design was adopted, and data were collected using a structured questionnaire which included the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) to assess depression levels. A total of 370 students from selected secondary schools in Egor LGA participated in the study. Data were analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, and the Chi-square statistical tool to test for significant differences. Findings revealed that 63.5% ofrespondents experienced symptoms of depression ranging from mild to severe. The leading causes of depression included academic pressure, family conflicts, social isolation, and financial difficulties. Female students were found to exhibit higher levels of depressive symptoms compared to male students. Furthermore, the study found that the presence of school social workers was limited, and their role in managing adolescent depression was underutilized due to staffing shortages and lack of awareness. The study concludes that depression significantly affects adolescents in secondary schools, and that there is a pressing need to strengthen mental health support systems, particularly by increasing the presence and functionality of school social workers

This study is about the socio economic effect of examination malpractice among university students. The study employed a survey research design, targeting residents in the area. The simple random sampling technique was employed to select teachers from schools, with a sample size of 100 respondents due to time constraints. The data collection instrument was a structured questionnaire designed by the researcher after a thorough review of the literature. The validity of the instrument was ensured through scrutiny by the project supervisor and experts. Reliability was determined by administering 20 copies
of the questionnaire to 20 teachers in public secondary schools in the area. The instrument was administered and collected by the researcher on the spot with the help of a research assistant in the area. The simple percentage method was used for data
analysis, making it easier to interpret and understand the information. The study showed that students personal problems, peer pressure, inadequate, teaching learning in schools, bribery and corruption on the parts of lecturers and examination officials tremendously lead to causes and perpetration of the behavior of examination malpractices common

The study investigated determinants and consequences of economic vulnerability among the elderly in Lokoja metropolis, Kogi State, Nigeria. The objective of this study was to investigate and highlight the determinants and consequences of economic vulnerability among the elderly in Lokoja metropolis, Kogi State. The research questions asked to achieve the objective of the study were as follows; What are the challenges faced by the elderly in Lokoja metropolis, Kogi State. What are the determinants of economic vulnerability among elderly in Lokoja metropolis, Kogi State. What are the health-related consequences of Economic Vulnerability among elderly in Lokoja metropolis, Kogi State. The sample size was 294 participants chosen from the study population using the Proportionate Stratified Random Sampling, the research instrument utilized was the questionnaire. Conclusion drawn from the analysis of the data retrieved from the questionnaire indicates that the elderly in particular require not just special care, but special facilities to make life meaningful and comfortable. Social workers are professional caregivers hence their involvement in caring for the elderly. Aside from the care, support and advice needed by the elderly and provided by social workers, there are some institutional mechanism which government needs to put in place to cushion the effects of economic vulnerability among the elderly. Recommendations were made based on the findings and they include: The government should take active and concrete measures towards implementing a viable social welfare programme for the elderly both at the federal, state and local government levels. This would ensure uniformity in implementation and Professional social workers must be encouraged to widen their operation horizon to accommodate the elderly.

The specific objectives were to investigate the causes of socio-economic factors influencing marital instability ,ascertain how financial stress contributes to marital instability among couples, find out how employment status and job insecurity influence marital relationships among couples, examine how educational attainment by couples affects marital relationship and find out the role of social workers in addressing socio-economic determinants of marital instability in Egor Local Government Area, Edo State

This study is an evaluation of the psychotherapeutic intervention for victims of sexual abuse in Egor Community Edo State. The study adopted the survey research design on the basis of which data were sourced using simple random sampling technique. A sample of two hundred participants was adopted. The data was anlysed using quantitative and qualitative analysis. The result revealed that cognitive behavioral therapeutic approach can helps treat emotional and behavioural problem of victims of sexual abuse. Psychodynamic therapy can impact positively on manifestations of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
following sexual abuse. Social work therapeutic approach can effectively manage trauma faced by victims of sexual abuse in Egor Community Edo State. The study recommends that cognitive behavioral therapeutic approach should be adopted since it can helps to treat emotional and behavioural problem of victims of sexual abuse, ii is very important to design a system that could easy intervene for survivals. The extent of trauma faced by sexual abused survivals should determine whether psychodynamic therapy can impact positively on manifestations of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following sexual abuse. This research work was carried out to examine the influence of peer group pressure on academic performance of Secondary School Students in Benin. Peer group plays a large role in the social, emotional and academic development of students; therefore, understanding the prospects and challenges of peer group is crucial for the productivity of educational processes and the organizational design of school systems in order to improve student’s academic performance. The study adopted mixed method design incorporating descriptive survey and ex post facto designs. Questionnaire was administered to students as the study was limited to three (3) Senior Secondary Schools in Ovia North-East of Benin. Three research questions guided the study. The findings of the study revealed that the peer group influences learning and certain factors like the social economic status and parental factor as they determine membership in most groups. The study also found out that pupils are closer to their friends than to their teachers and parents concerning their academics and that parents monitor their children’s peer group association. The descriptive survey research design was employed in the study. The population consisted of residents in Egor local government area, Edo State. The Taro Yamane sampling technique was employed in selecting a sample size of 390 respondents. The instrument for data collection was the questionnaire. Data gathered was analysed using descriptive statistics. The study discovered that the causes of marital divorce in the family are women wanting to be
independent, alcoholism and substance abuse and infidelity. Children having to relocate from one place to another, trust concerns, a decline in society's worth, a loss of human capital, and an increase in the cost to the government and those who pay taxes are some of the effects of divorce on society. Mood problems, academic failure, an increase in hazardous sexual behaviour, and low self-esteem are some effects of divorce on children. Couples may avoid family strife by being composed, talking more clearly, consulting a professional, and showing respect for one another. Thinking optimistically, getting counselling, spending more time with family, maintaining a schedule, and fostering a happy environment at home are all strategies to get over the divorce. Social workers are crucial in addressing divorce-related difficulties because they assist both parties in navigating the divorce process, develop child-care strategies, and mediate disputes that may develop as a result of the divorce process. According to the study, greater assistance should be given to couples trying to resolve their marital problems in order to reduce the likelihood of divorce. This can entail making marriage counselling, couples therapy, or other types of assistance available. Couples should receive education on the possible effects of divorce, such as monetary instability, mental suffering, and the impact on children
