Abstract
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: While existing data shows that increased Intraocular pressure predisposes individuals to glaucoma, it is a challenge figuring out if increased IOP can be traced to myopia. PURPOSE: To investigate if myopia affects IOP in people of various ages and gender. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of one hundred and two (102) myopes of power (- 0.50D to over -6.0D) was recruited for this study. The myopic powers were measured objectively by Retinoscopy and Subjectively by Subjective Refraction with a Trial lens set and Snellens Visual Acuity Chart while the IOP was measured via the Perkins Handheld Applanation tonometer.
DATA ANALYSIS: Data obtained was analyzed with the statistical package for social science (SPSS version 22.0) and the following conclusions were drawn from the results gotten;
i. The study found out that there was no significant difference between IOP in males
and females as p-value was greater than 0.05.
ii. There is statistically significant difference in IOP across the three degrees of myopia groups.
iii. There is statistically significant difference in IOP across the three ages groups. iv. There is no association between gender and degree of myopia in the study population. CONTRIBUTION TO OPTOMETRY: This study was projected to identify and clarify any relationships between Myopia and IOP in people of various ages and gender within the university of Benin, Benin City, Edo state which was actualized with recommendations made.

APPLICATION OF PIZOELECTRIC SMART SENSORS IN CURBING CRUDE OIL PIPELINE VANDALISM IN THE NIGER DELTA AREA (REVIEW)

Abstract
Oil pipeline vandalism is the ugly act of drilling or cutting into the pipelines with the intent to steal its contents. Between 2010 and 2012, a total of 2,787 pipeline line breaches were reported on pipelines belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), resulting in a loss of 157.81 metric tons of petroleum products worth about N12.53 billion naira, not even
mentioning the loss of human lives, and environmental pollution. Hence there is a dire need for Nigeria's Oil pipelines to be monitored constantly and remotely, so as to checkmate these said acts of vandalism. An Arduino Uno board, a GSM/GPS module, and a Lithium ion battery pack enclosed in a sealed anti-corrosion container makes up the surveillance system. The prototype was tested on a 10m pipeline, buried 2m deep with piezo-electric pickup sensors of threshold range from 21 to 210 attached to the pipeline. The acquired analog signals are processed by the Arduino Uno controller board into a digital signal, using a customized algorithm that quantifies the vibrational activities going on at the surface. The results obtained contain sensor node positions in a pipeline network, geographic coordinates (longitude and latitude), date, time and distance. Which are transmitted as an SMS alert (using the GSM/GPS module shield) to the control station or relevant security officials for the proactive interception of vandalism activities.

Abstract
This research is an examination of the phonological aspects of English words borrowed into the structure of the Edo language. The study objectives are to identify and describe lexical items borrowed from English in Edo. To classify the borrowed words that have penetrated the Edo lexicon into types, and analyze the linguistic environment that characterizes the borrowed words. The
data are extracted from speakers of the Edo language are analyzed using the Borrowing Transfer Theory. The findings reveal that the borrowings occur at the lexical level as a communicative strategy of Edo speakers to find words that Stand for objects or new concepts in their culture. This study, also, shows that the borrowing situation occur as a result of the dominant language (English) exerting pressure on the less dominant language (Edo). Some of the borrowed items are already fully nativized in Ẹdo while others are only partially nativized. The partially nativized items are observed to contain forms that are not found in Ẹdo. These include English sounds (such as the voiceless palate-alveolar affricate [ʧ], the voiced palate-alveolar affricate [ʤ] and the voiceless palate- alveolar fricative [ʃ]), word initial and/or word final consonants in nouns, consonant clusters, etc.

DESIGN AND FABRICATION OF AN AUTOMATED SLICING MACHINE FOR ROOT (YAM) AND PERENNIAL CROPS (BANANA, PLANTAIN AND CUCUMBER)

Year of Publication
Publication Type
Abstract
Perennial crops (Plantain, cucumber and banana) and tuber crops (yam) are one of the alternative sources for low cost carbohydrates and is considered as one of the major crop in the Nigeria. They are perishable perennial and tuber crops that tends to easily deteriorates which in turn pose a problem in the society. Thus, the processing of plantain, cucumber, banana and yam after harvest is necessary to extend the shelf life of products in their raw form. Therefore, the aim of the project is to design and fabricate an automated slicing machine capable of slicing plantain, cucumber, banana and yam into chips that can also be readily made available in other processed forms whilst taking into consideration, fast and less labor processing, ease of use and hygienic design. The major components of the machine that were incorporated in the machine to achieve the set out aim and objectives included the spring, pulley, bearing, electric motor, mainframe, belt drive, cutting disc, and slicing shaft. The machine was powered by a single-phase, 1440rpm, and 0.75KW electric motor. These machine specifications were induced to achieve the results. The performance of the machine was evaluated in slicing four selected agro-based crops (yam, plantain, cucumber, and banana) grouped into small sizes at machine speeds of 40 rpm, 80.12rpm, and 630rpm respectively. The parameters that were investigated were performance efficiency and capacity. In performing the machine test, each fingers of plantain, cucumber, banana and yam were first peeled manually with a knife to remove its pericarp (outer covering), and then, these peeled sets of cucumber, plantain, banana and yam were loaded into the feeding inlet after the spring compression. During this process, the slicing process took place and the machine’s capacity, efficiency, and thickness were determined in order to evaluate the machine’s performance to slice plantain, cucumber, plantain and banana. A capacity of 59Kg/hr, performance efficiency of 92.1% and at speed of 40 rpm was obtained for yam, while a capacity of 62.4Kg/hr., performance efficiency of 89.99% at a speed of 630 rpm was obtained for banana, a capacity of 48.5Kg/hr., efficiency of 90.5% at a speed of 80.1rpm was obtained for cucumber and capacity of 72.7Kg/hr. and efficiency of 89.95%, at a speed of 630 rpm was obtained for plantain. The result of the study shows that the machine can slice root and tuber crops satisfactorily with slices ranging from 2mm to 2.5mm mean thickness. This machine was made with the intention of assisting cucumber, yam, plantain and banana chips producing industries

Abstract
The study of inter group relations is significant because it reveals the fact that the communities in Nigeria and Africa in general were not disunited nor isolated from each other; they related with each other before colonial conquest.1 Works on intergroup
relations debunks the euro-centric view that Africans were uncivilized and barbaric, and that no meaningful interaction took place within the region prior to the arrival of Europeans.2 However, there exist several literature on this subject.
