EVALUATING THE KNOWLEDGE AND PERCEPTION OF RADIOGRAPHERS TOWARDS THE ROLE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN X-RAY REPORTING IN EDO STATE

Abstract
This study evaluated the knowledge, perceptions, and challenges regarding the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in X-ray reporting among 60 radiographers professionals in Edo State, Nigeria. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson's correlation. The results indicated a moderate level of foundational knowledge (Mean = 6.12 out of 10), with strengths in macro- concepts but weaknesses in understanding specific AI tools ( 40.00% ) and limitations/bias ( 45.00% ). Overall perceptions were positive and optimistic (Mean = 3.65 ), with strong agreement that AI should serve as a supportive tool (Mean 4.35) to enhance workflow efficiency (Mean 4.30). Inferential analysis revealed a significant positive correlation (r = 0.52, p < 0.001) between knowledge and favorable perception, confirming that education drives professional acceptance. However, the adoption of AI faces severe structural barriers: Lack of infrastructure (e.g., high-speed internet) was ranked as the most frequent challenge (Mean 4.10), followed by high implementation costs and insufficient training. The study concludes that while the human capital in Edo State is willing and ready to adopt AI, systemic infrastructural and educational deficits represent the primary obstacles. Targeted investment in Industrial Training infrastructure and mandatory specialized training are essential to transition AI from theory to reliable clinical practice.

ASSESSING THE ATTITUDE AND PERCEPTION OF RADIOGRAPHERS TOWARDS HIV/AIDS PATIENTS IN SELECTED HOSPITALS IN EDO STATE.

The paper determined the attitudes and perceptions of radiographers towards patients with HIV/AIDS in the selected hospitals within Edo State, Nigeria. The cross- sectional was a descriptive design and 60 registered radiographers were selected, which included the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Edo Specialist Hospital and Raytouch Diagnostics. The structured and self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data which were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics using the Statistical Package of the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 30.0. The findings showed that the attitude and perception of radiographers towards HIV/AIDS patients were generally positive as indicated by high mean score of compliance to universal precautions (Mean = 4.07) and fairness to patients (Mean = 3.78). However, some neutral answers revealed some remaining fear, lack of trust in regular routine HIV care and difficulty with poor facilities. The correlation between the years of practice (Spearman = 0.016, p = 0.902) and attitude was not significant, which indicated that the years of experience did not define positive attitudes alone. The research established that the radiographers are characterized by a commendable professionalism with regard to HIV/AIDS patients but need the unceasing training and enhanced institutional subsidies to uphold this standard. It suggests continuous professional growth, enhanced infection-control facilities, and stigma-reduction measures in order to boost the confidence and quality of care delivery of radiographers

ACCURACY OF X-RAY REPORTING IN THE DIAGNOSES OF ELDERLY PATIENT WITH SKULL FRACTURE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF BENIN TEACHING HOSPITAL

This retrospective diagnostic accuracy study evaluated the performance of plain skull radiographs in detecting skull fractures among elderly patients(≥ 65 years) at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), using computed tomography (CT) as the reference standard. A total of 41 patient with 31 further referred for CT scan, which was done within a 72-hour interval between January 2022 and June 2025, were reviewed. The study cohort demonstrated a high fracture prevalence of 46.2%. Nearly 76% of patients who initially underwent X-ray were subsequently referred for CT. Diagnostic analysis revealed high sensitivity (89.47%), meeting the predefined clinical benchmark (≥90%), but suboptimal specificity (83.3%), which fell short of the target threshold. This resulted in 2 missed fractures (false negatives), largely attributed to the difficulty in X-ray in determining certain type of fracture (basal skull fracture). The study concludes that, despite its high sensitivity, plain skull X-ray lacks sufficient specificity to reliably exclude fractures in high-risk elderly patients at UBTH. It is therefore recommended that CT be adopted as the primary imaging modality for elderly head trauma, accompanied by targeted professional training to enhance the recognition of subtle fractures on X-ray
