RECRUITMENT POLICY AND ITS EFFECT ON MANPOWER DEVELOPMENT IN THE CIVIL SERVICE: A CASE STUDY OF EDO STATE CIVIL SERVICE

Abstract
This research work seek to examine recruitment policy and its effect on manpower development in the civil service: a case study of Edo state civil service. The study made use of questionnaire to obtain data from respondent. Four objectives were raised for the study. The study found that Civil servants perception is used to gauge in Edo State civil Service. Entry level qualifications reveal that the recruitment drive is not discriminatory. Many respondents agree that recruitment process is fair and equitable. It also found that Respondents are divided on their perception on the satisfaction with the system of promotion in the Edo State Civil service. and thus recommend that That the civil service commission should embark on a comprehensive audit and appraisal of workers to identify the gaps in manpower utilization in Edo state civil service

REMOTE SENSING ASSESSMENT OF URBAN BLIGHT IN LAGOS MAINLAND METROPOLIS

Abstract
This study examined the Remote Sensing Assessment of Urban Blight in Lagos Mainland Metropolis. The objectives of the study were to; identify the causes of urban blight in Lagos mainland metropolis; examine the factors influencing blight and its rapid spread in the study area; identify the effect of blight on other elements of the urban environment; identify the most susceptible areas to blight impact in the study area and assess the measures and structures being put in place to curb urban blight in the study area. Remote Sensing and Satellite Imagery was used in assessing the level of urban blight in Lagos mainland. A comprehensive analysis of the remote sensing imagery obtained from these areas and direct physical observation, revealed that blight which is the primarily examined focal point of this research has been the first, variable that is responsible for the general deterioration of these places. Also discovered is that urban sprawling has led to a struggle for survival and accommodation facilities, thereby causing a corresponding increase in the fees and rents of the housing facilities in these areas. Blighted areas were also found to be breeding grounds of crimes. To combat the environmental and societal issues of urban blight, the study recommends urban regeneration as a curative measure for the urban blight in Lagos Mainland Metropolis. Careful planning of development in potentially flood prone areas with resettlement strategies and emergency preparedness plans developed by the involved the government in order to easily evacuate citizens in the occurrence of flood disasters. Policies that setup City codes, need to set a minimum standard for building and property maintenance and these codes need to be effectively and efficiently enforced. Also recommended is that a framework for a political, regulatory and administrative approach should be put in place to effectively combat urban blight in Lagos Mainland Metropolis.

The principal aim of this research work is to assess the need for states and local governments to generate adequate revenue from internal sources and the strategies that are being used to carry this out because it has become a matter of extreme urgency and importance. This need for states and local governments to generate revenue in this manner, underscores the eagerness on the part of the state and local government and even the federal government to look for new sources of revenue or to become aggressive and innovative in the mode of collecting revenue from existing sources. Some of the causes of inadequate internal revenue generation includes: staggering population increase, diversion of revenue belonging to government into private pockets, the unscrupulous activities of some tax consultants etc. This research work attempts to answer questions like what
has been the impact of federal Inland Revenue service in revenue generation in Edo state, what has been the effect of internally generated revenue in Edo state and other questions listed in the research questions. The result of this study is significant to both the state government and the local government. This research work is restricted to Edo state. The sampling technique that was employed for this research is the cluster sampling technique. Of the 18 local governments in Edo state, two of them
(Egor and Ovia north east) were selected as our sample.

The study assessed the impact of the community based mental health programme onyouthsdevelopment in Ekosodin Community, Benin City. The population of the study comprisedfour hundred (400) respondents who are youths between the ages of 18 to 35 years whohavelived in Ekosodin community in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. The research method/designused for the study was survey research. The data collected from the respondents wereusedfor data analysis through simple descriptive statistics namely, simple percentage, frequencycount and mean rating. The findings of the research concluded that there are manyfactorsthat contribute to the incidence of mental health challenges among youths of Ekosodincommunity such as peer pressure, substance abuse, unemployment, financial problems, family challenges, lack of parental guidance etc. The community based mental healthprogramme has a significant impact on youth development in Ekosodin community, BeninCity. There are many limitations to the community based mental health programmeinEkosodin Community such as lack of financing to sustain mental health programming, stigmaand discrimination and lack of community awareness which impairs the effectiveness of thecommunity based mental health programme. Social workers play a significant role inthesuccessful implementation and effectiveness of mental health programming by helpingtoascertain who needs special programmes, joining forces with other professionals intheimplementation of mental health programming, bridging the gap between the communityandmental health service providers and increasing effectiveness and sustainability of communitybased mental health programmes. Based on these findings, it was suggested that thegovernment and other stakeholders increase funding and material resources for thecommunity based mental health programme in Ekosodin. Increased financial resources will support what is currently being done, allow for trained professionals to be hired, andcreatemodern counselling and therapy spaces for the youths.

This research work seeks to explore the herder/farmer conflicts and human security in Enugu State, Nigeria, with a view to situating its nature, causes, dynamics, effects and implications. By way of historical analysis of previous and present studies anchored on the political ecology perspective, the research posits that the conflicts have been informed by the desperate struggle
for competitive survival and subsistence in an environment characterized by ecological scarcity and livelihood insecurity. The study had the following specific objectives; determine the socio- economic attributes of the rural crop herders/farmers; identify the sources of herders famers conflicts in rural farmers on rural development and describe the methods adopted to resolve
herders assess the ecological effects of migration but others farmers on rural development and describe the methods adopted to resolve others from us conflicts with rural crops in the area. The research finds that the situation has been exacerbated by the phenomenon of climate change, whose dynamics tend to have been aggravating natural resource conflicts across the world. The research submits that the conflicts situation under review portends negatively for sustainable societal progress especially national security in Nigeria.

IMPACT OF COMMUNITY BASED MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAMMES ON YOUTH DEVELOPMENT IN OREDO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE, NIGERIA

Globally, mental health disorders are a major public health issue, affecting people across all age groups. Approximately 970 million people were living with a mental disorder in 2019, with anxiety and depression being the most common conditions (World Health Organization 2022). The objective of the study was to examine the impact of community-based mental health programmes on youth development in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, Nigeria. Hence the study ascertained the causes of mental health challenges among youth in the study area, explored the community-based mental health programs, determined how community-based mental health programs influence youth development, identified ways to improve the mental health and explored the role of social workers in community-based mental health programs in the Oredo Local Government Area. The study adopted the mixed-method type of research, also known as triangulation. This design allows to triangulate data by using multiple sources of information to confirm or validate each other’s. The study population included residents of Oredo LGA 18 years and above without prejudice to ethnic nationality, social status, or educational qualifications. LGA counsellors, health workers, and community heads in the LGA also form part of the Oredo LGA. The sample size for this was determined using an appropriate mathematical model for sample size and the multi-stage, otherwise known as area sampling, procedure in selecting respondents for the study. The structured questionnaire and In-Depth Interview (IDI) were used in data collection. The analysis and discussion were based on the data from the field using descriptive statistics and content analysis respectively. The findings from the study revealed that there were different causes of mental health challenges in the study area. The causes could be linked to spiritual, physical, or social and psychological triggers. These triggers included spiritual factors, such as the belief in the possession of evil spirits, and psychological factors, like frequent exposure to stressful and traumatic events. The findings further identified social triggers such as family history, poverty, and drug abuse as leading causes of mental health challenges in the study area. The findings revealed that existing mental health programs, like the school-based mental health program, were very effective. It was, however, discovered that the existing mental health xi program in the study area was not participatory. That is, the community members were not drafted as partners in the process towards addressing the mental health crisis. The services was also not easily accessible thereby limiting their benefits to those who needed them most. The study therefore recommends appropriate implementation of community-based mental health programmes that are participatory. That is, the type that engage the host community in the design, formulation, and implementation of mental health programs in the study area. The programme should be designed in such a way that it engage local leaders, community members, and youth themselves.

THE IMPACT OF POPULATION GROWTH ON THE SOCIO ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES IN EGOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE, NIGERIA

This study examined the impact of population growth on the socio economic activities in Egor Local Government Area of Edo state as a case study. It consisted of three (3) research questions, which were used to elicit data from the respondents. The study adopted the survey design. Three research questions were raised and one hypothesis was formulated and tested in
the study. The population under study was 445,800, which comprised of the population in Egor LGA of Edo state as at the time of this research. 100 residents formed the research sample size using Taro Yamane sampling technique. The research instrument used was the structured questionnaire, which was administered to the respondents by the researcher. The data gathered
was analyzed using the IBM SPSS statistics (version 19), where descriptive statistics (Frequency, simple percentage and count) was used to analyze the responses and t-test used to test the hypothesis formulated. Results from the analyzed data indicated that overpopulation is caused by various factors which over the years, has caused damages to the socio economic health of Egor LGA.The study recommends that there should be campaigns to sensitize families on the need to maintain a manageable family size will go a long way in reducing the population size. Secondly, Nigerian families especially the men need to be sensitized on the unbiased strengths of a female child. Lastly policies that check immigration should be taken seriously.

This study was to carry out a comparative study on the impact of social on the political mobilization and public opinion: a case study of the Nigerian 2023 presidential election. The study was necessary to examine how impactful social media was on political mobilization and public opinion a case study of the Nigerian 2023 presidential election. The study adopts the investigative survey research method. The research instrument was a well-structured questionnaire. The questionnaire was validated by the project supervisor for final correction. The reliability test was carried out using the test re-test method to arrive at a value that was reliable. Questionnaires were administered and answers offered were collated and analyzed using the frequency count, mean and standard deviation, while regression analysis was used to test for hypothesis. Findings from the study revealed that social media was impactful on the political mobilization and public opinion a case study of the Nigerian 2023 presidential election, it will help ordinary Nigerians understand how social media affected the 2023 presidential election; it will reveal both negative and positive effects of social media on political mobilisation and public opinion

SOCIAL WORK INTERVENTION STRATEGIES FOR WOMEN VICTIMS OF WIDOWHOOD RITES IN UVWIE COMMUNITY

This study examines social work intervention strategies for women victims of widowhood rites in Uvwie Community. The study adopted survey administration of questionnaire to a sample of 100 respondents. The data was analysed using simple percentage tables. The results revealed that the actual problems facing window in Uvwie community can be handled by social work strategies. The result shows that cultural factors are major cause of these widowhood rite problems in Uvwie community. The result also shows that widowhood rites affect children and the society at large. The study recommends that wwidows need to be adequately educated; Governments, Social Worker and Non- governmental organizations, as well as religious bodies should be proactive and take up the responsibility of educating women so as to resist them from those who want to subject them to traumatizing widowhood rites. All stakeholders should embark on programmes that would empower widows through various skills acquisition programmes, for them to become self-reliant and take care of their immediate families as well as to contribute to
the growth and development of the nation. Also, Social Worker, Governments and all other stake holders should embark on programmes that would enhance periodic information through enlightenment programmes for widows and the generality of women, particularly on the issue of widowhood. Women should be wise enough to encourage their husband’s to write wills and also to formally concede properties to them while the man is still alive. On the other hand, the women themselves should try as much as possible to be working all find something doing this will ease the financial burden that will arise at the demise of their husbands.
