STRATEGIES FOR IMPROVING MATHEMATICS LEARNING IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS (A CASE STUDY OF OREDO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE)

Abstract
The study was carried out to investigate strategies for improving mathematics learning in Oredo local Government area of Edo state. To achieve this study, fifteen (15) schools were randomly selected within Oredo local Government Area. A total of ninety respondents were used. To achieve the fundamental purpose of this research and to ensure easy collection of data, Five (5) research questions were formulated. The research instrument employed for the study was questionnaire. Data collected were subjected to analysis using the simple percentage. The findings revealed that qualification of teachers affects students learning, there is need for in-service training for mathematics teachers. The findings also revealed that the use instructional materials will help to improve the study of mathematics and when teachers are well motivated it promotes effectiveness in the classroom. The research recommended that mathematics teachers should re-examine their teaching methods to include less lecture method and more student directed activities which involves the use of mathematical laboratory, government should provide instructional materials to help increase the learning of mathematics and the Federal ministry of education, state ministry of education and national mathematical center in Nigeria should provide special in service programmes for mathematics teachers.

A STUDY OF THE PERCEPTION OF THE NOMENCLATURE, ADULT AND NON-FORMAL EDUCATION,BYTHEADULTAND NON-FORMAL EDUCATION STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF BENIN

Abstract
The study investigated the perception of the nomenclature ‘Adult and Non Formal Education’ by the students of Adult and Non-Formal Education, University of Benin. The survey research design was adopted for the study. The population was comprised of 100 undergraduates of Adult and Non Formal Education, 25 students from each level of the undergraduate study constituted the sample of the study. A researcher based questionnaire designed to find out how the students perceive the nomenclature of the department, validated for face and content with a reliability coefficient of 0.74 by test re-test method was used to collect information from the respondents. Research questions were used as the basis for the analysis of the results. The results of the study are in the following order; the students of Adult and Non Formal Education are not proud of the nomenclature of the department, the students of Adult and Non-Formal Education are ashamed of the nomenclature of the department, majority of the students of Adult and Non Formal Education are interested in school politics but are not confident to contest for the post of the SUG president for fear that they would lose out in the election because of the nomenclature of the department, the students of
the department substitute the nomenclature of the department with other names they prefer in order to hide the shame that the nomenclature of the department brings to them, also, the students of the department wish for a change of the nomenclature of the department. The following were recommended; the students of the department should be encouraged to identify with the department and spread the good news of adult education to the society, the students should be encouraged to contest for elective posts in the school and stop concluding that they would fail when they haven’t tried, the nomenclature of the department should be changed to a nomenclature that is more fashionable than Adult and Non-Formal Education so as to make students feel proud to tell people their course of study and stop substituting the nomenclature of their department with other names.

The gradual dissipisation of our culture coupled with the growth of indiscipline and moral decadence among our youths, especially secondary school students, should be a thing of concern for any right thinking Nigerian. Since they are the leaders of tomorrow, the need to inculcate in them that aspect of education that will help to mould their lives and bring about the restoration of warning cultural values becomes necessary. It is on this note that this research work investigates into the methods associated with the teaching and learning of poetry and literature in general in junior secondary schools in Egor local Government Area of Edo State.

The main purpose of this study is to evaluate whether the female undergraduate students of the university of Benin are aware of the breast self Examination, if they practice it, how often and how effectively they practice breast self examination. The research work began with a general background of the study, purpose, statement of the problem as well as the significant of the study. Relevant literature by various scholars reviewed on the knowledge of the BSE, benefit, effect, methods of carrying out BSE and predisposing factors of breast cancer. It went further in discussing factor that influence the practice of self breast examination .It went further to discuss the description of the procedures used in gathering data that are related to the research questions. In this third chapter of the research work, the proportionate sampling techniques was used, the use of questionnaires as one of the instrument used in the collections of data was applied by the researcher and the data were later analyzed from the respondents response. Lastly, conclusion and recommendation were made by the
researcher where it was deemed fit to recommend and suggestion were also made as regard to breast self examination among female students

This project work was carried out to identify some factors that affects the academic performance of senior secondary school students in Economics in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. Seven research questions were raised to achieve the purpose of this study. In carrying out this study, a descriptive survey research design was employed, while a sample size of 60 students and 30 teachers in the selected secondary schools which was five out of the twelve schools. The data were analyzed with simple percentage. The study further revealed other factors which militate against students’ academic performance in Economics. These includes: nonavailability of instructional/learning materials, rather short time allocated to the period, teaching/learning environment, fear of mathematics, students study habit and others. The necessary steps to be taken to ensure that students’ academic performance in Economics improve, were recommended. These include the use of instructional materials by teachers, distribution of economics textbooks to school libraries, more time to be allocated

The purpose of this study was to investigate social studies teachers’ perception on the use of community resources in the teaching and learning of social studies in some selected junior secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. The sample of the study was made up of 100 social studies teachers in 20 junior secondary schools. three research questions were raised in the study to find out the teachers’ perception on the use of community resources. The research instrument used for this study was a modified 4- point Likert type scale questionnaire consisting of twenty items. The instrument used was validated by the supervisor and two other experts in the department of educational psychology and curriculum studies. Data were collected and simple percentage and t-test of independent sample was used to analyze the data collected. The finding of this study revealed that the perception of professional and non-professional teachers was not significant in their use of community resources. However, it was recommended among others, that there should be full scale implementation of community resources in the teaching/ learning social studies in junior secondary schools.

Entrepreneurial development study in the University of Benin is
one mandatory course encouraged by the federal government
to be taught in universities in order to inculcate in graduates
skills for self reliance. Entrepreneurial programme is therefore
seen as an important tool in reducing unemployment amongst
university graduates. Therefore this study was designed to
examine Students Perception of the Benefit of Entrepreneurial
Development Study Towards Self Reliance in the University of
Benin. The sample population consists of 110 students who
have experienced entrepreneurial study. Data were collected
through the use of well structured self-administered
questionnaires designed to illicit information from the students. The study has positive benefits because it impacts and equips
the students with entrepreneurial, managerial, and business
development skills. In conclusion, the course helps to build
entrepreneurs who are likely to become engaged in small and
medium scale enterprise which would ultimately lead to the
economic development of Nigeria. it is then encourage that all
higher institutions in the federation should embrace entrepreneurial development course into their curriculum. Furthermore, the research study recommends amongst other things that the centre for entrepreneurial development should set-up information centre which would enlighten and educate the students about the benefit in taking interest in the programme. workshop and seminars should be organized for seasoned entrepreneurs to mentor the student.

This study was designed to assess the competencies possessed by junior secondary school teachers in teaching and learning of computer science in Oredo Local Government of Edo State. To achieve the fundamental goals of this research, three (3) research questions were raised. This research design for the study was the survey design, five (5) schools were randomly selected within the local Government Area. Simple random technique was used to select a hundred students and seven (7) teachers were used as the sample for the study. The researcher used structured questionnaires to collect data from the respondents and also simple percentage and SPSS for data analysis. The study revealed that computer teachers are competent and
Computer science teachers have practical knowledge of computer science also, computer science teachers demonstrate adequate teaching skills in teaching computer science. Based on the findings, the following recommendations were made: Teachers should be trained in the use of internet and it’s utilization to update their knowledge, Teachers should refresh their knowledge of computers and computer science periodically and Teachers should devise means for making their students enthusiastic about computer
science lessons.
