Visual Impairment Management and Associated Socio-demographic Factors among School Children in Delta State, Nigeria

Abstract / Summary
Background: Visual impairment (VI) is a major public health concern that can have a significant negative impact on a child's education and quality of life due to inability to perform normal daily tasks such as reading, writing and recreation. Objective: The aim of this study was to identify the sociodemographic characteristics linked to the visual impairment in school children in Delta State, Nigeria. Methods: A total of 201 participants in a descriptive cross-sectional survey, ranging in age from 6 to 19, were chosen at random from primary and secondary schools in each of Delta State's three senatorial districts. A thorough eye examination and a standardized questionnaire were used to assess the participants. SPSS version 28.0 was used to analyse the data, which were then displayed in frequency tables. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant, and all reported p-values were two-tailed. Results: Among the participants, 118 individuals (58.7%) were female. The prevalence of visual impairment (VI) in this study was 28.9% of which 69.0%, 22.4% and 8.6% had mild, moderate, and severe VI, respectively. VI was higher in females (16.9%) than in males (11.9%), and lower in primary school age group (8%) than the secondary school age group (20.9%). Socioeconomic characteristics, including parents' income, work status, and educational attainment, as well as gender and age group, did not substantially correlate with visual impairment (P> 0.05). Conclusion: The study found that children of parents with low educational status and unemployment were more likely to be blind or visually impaired, even though there was no significant correlation found between sociodemographic characteristics and visual impairment. Initiation of regular school eye screening program by governmental and non-governmental organizations is recommended for early detection, diagnosis, and management of visual impairment among school children.

Prevalence of Visual Impairment among Primary and Secondary School Children in Delta State, Nigeria.

Purpose: Visual impairment (VI) being a state of physiological or pathological disorders of vision poses a burden on human activities globally. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence and risk factors of VI among school children in Delta State. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study of 201 respondents aged 6 to 19 years were randomly selected from primary and secondary schools in the three senatorial districts of Delta State. Participants were evaluated using a structured questionnaire, distance Snellen chart, ophthalmoscope, and torchlight. Vision status was defined using World Health Organization categories of visual impairment based on presenting visual acuity (PVA). Data were presented in frequency tables, charts and analysed with Chi-Square statistics. All p-values reported were two-tailed and statistical significance was defined as P < 0.05. Results: The mean age of participants was 12.30± 3.14 years, while 118 (58.7%) were females. The overall prevalence of VI (PVA of <6/18 in the better eye) was 58 (28.9%). The prevalence of mild, moderate, and severe VI was 40 (19.9%), 13 (6.5%), and 5 (2.5%) respectively. Refractive error 47 (23.4%) was the leading cause of VI. The prevalence of VI was higher in females, children 13-19 years, and respondents whose parents’ income per month was >100,000. These observed differences were not statistically significant (p>0.05) Conclusion: Untreated refractive error was the leading cause of VI among school children in Delta State. This is an avoidable cause of VI that can be treated with spectacle prescription to ease the burden of visual loss.

Effects of Antioxidant Vitamins ACE and Iron Supplements on Visual Impairment among Primary and Secondary School Children in Delta State, Nigeria

The eyes like every other organ of the body, are biochemical elements that respond to both helpful or harmful biochemical stimuli leading to either a healthy or pathological state. Anaemia, antioxidant vitamin deficiencies and visual impairment (VI) are public health problems resulting in poor eye health globally. This study aimed to determine the relationship among anaemia, antioxidant vitamins and VI as well as the effect of antioxidant vitamins and iron supplements on visual acuity and anaemia. A pretest-posttest study of 201 respondents randomly selected from primary and secondary schools in three senatorial districts of Delta State, Nigeria. Sociodemographic data and visual acuity tests were done before and after intervention. Preventive intervention with a single dose of vitamin A, daily Vitamin C, weekly vitamin E, and twice weekly ferrous sulphate supplements was administered for five weeks. Spectacle prescriptions were administered to correct refractive errors (RE). Pretest-posttest haemoglobin and serum vitamins ACE were done using JENWAY 6320D Spectrophotometer. Data were analysed using SPSS version 28.0. Statistical significance was defined as P< 0.05. Findings showed that 83 (41.3%) were males and 118 (58.7%) were females with a mean age of 12.30± 3.14 years. Prevalence of anaemia and VI at baseline was 38.3% and 28.9% respectively, and 0% and 5.5% post-intervention respectively. Prevalence of vitamins A and C at baseline was 12.4% and 12.9% respectively, and post-intervention was 6.0% and 15.9% respectively. Prevalence of vitamin E at baseline and post-intervention was 0.0% respectively. RE was the major cause of VI with a prevalence of 23.4%. The association between visual impairment at baseline and impaired vision with spectacle prescription intervention was statistically significant (P=0.001). The correlation of anaemia, vitamins ACE and VI were not statistically significant (P>0.05). Odd ratios of vitamins ACE and iron supplements were predicted to decrease the risk of having anaemia and VI, though not statistically significant (P>0.05). This study showed that antioxidant vitamins and iron supplementation as well as spectacle prescription were effective in reducing the prevalence of anaemia, antioxidant vitamin deficiencies and visual impairment among primary and secondary school children in Delta State.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN VISUAL ANOMALIES AND HEARING IMPAIRMENT

Background: Dual sensory impairment, involving both visual and auditory deficiencies, significantly impacts an individual’s ability to communicate, learn, and navigate their environment. Research suggested that hearing-impaired individuals were at a higher risk of developing ocular abnormalities, including refractive errors and contrast sensitivity deficits. Given their reliance on vision for communication, understanding the prevalence and nature of visual impairment in this population was crucial for effective healthcare interventions. Purpose: To determine the relationship between visual and hearing impairment in affected individuals. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted at the school for the hearing impaired in Benin City using purposive sampling. Participants were selected based on inclusion criteria, with demographic and hearing-impairment data obtained from school records and teachers. Visual assessments included Tumbling E visual acuity testing, ophthalmoscopy, retinoscopy, subjective refraction, contrast sensitivity testing using the Pelli-Robson chart, and cover test. Data were collected using structured forms and analyzed using SPSS Version 25.0. Data Analysis: Descriptive and inferential statistical methods were employed. The prevalence of visual impairment and contrast sensitivity abnormalities was determined. Chi-square tests assessed associations between age, gender, and dual sensory impairment. Results: Among the 100 hearing-impaired participants examined, hyperopia (34%) was the most common refractive anomaly, followed by compound hyperopic astigmatism (15%), while mixed astigmatism (4%) was the least. Visual impairment before correction was 6%, and after refraction, normal vision increased to 96% with 2% impaired. Contrast sensitivity was normal in 96% of participants, with 2% showing mild reduction. No severe visual impairment, blindness, or significant association with age or gender was found. Conclusion: Hearing-impaired individuals showed a high prevalence of correctable refractive errors. Most visual deficits improved with refraction, underscoring the importance of routine vision screening and timely optical correction in schools for the hearing impaired. Contribution to Optometry: This study provided valuable insights into the relationship between visual and auditory impairments, supporting improved screening and management strategies for individuals with dual sensory impairment.

ASSESSMENT OF PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF LOW VISION AND BLINDNESS IN THE UNIVERSITY OF BENIN COMMUNITY

Abstract
This study examined the level of awareness and understanding of low vision and blindness within the University of Benin community. The research aimed to explore prevailing perceptions, attitudes, and knowledge gaps regarding visual impairments among students, faculty, and staff members. A sample population of 403 respondents was used for the study.

A mixed-methods research approach involving surveys and interviews was adopted to obtain comprehensive insights into the community’s knowledge and perceptions of visual impairments. The study investigated common misconceptions about low vision and blindness, societal attitudes toward affected individuals, and the availability of support systems and resources within the university environment. Data collected from participants were analyzed using tables and simple percentages.

The findings revealed a relatively high level of awareness among respondents, with 86.1% indicating familiarity with low vision and 96.0% acknowledging awareness of blindness. Despite this level of awareness, several misconceptions and societal perceptions regarding visual impairments were identified. These misconceptions highlight the need for improved education and awareness programs within the university community.

The study concludes that while awareness of visual impairments exists within the University of Benin community, there is still a need to address knowledge gaps and societal misconceptions. It recommends the implementation of targeted educational initiatives and support programs to promote inclusivity, empathy, and better support for individuals with low vision and blindness.
