Prevalence and driving-related factors influencing prediabetes and diabetes among commercial drivers in Benin City metropolis, Edo State, Nigeria

Abstract / Summary
This study aimed to describe the prevalence and driving-related risk-factors influencing prediabetes and diabetes in commercial drivers, Benin City metropolis, Edo State, Nigeria. Descriptive cross-sectional study of public transport drivers aged between 20 - 70 years (mean age 48.09 ± 11.21 years) was conducted in Benin City. Purposive-sampling technique was used to recruit 341 subjects into the survey. Structured questionnaires were administered to all participants to collect their demographic and personal information. Fasting blood sugar (FBS) values were obtained using ACCU-CHEK Active Model: GB 31041669 device. Normal, prediabetes and diabetes FBS values were considered as 70 - 99 mg/dL, 100 - 125 mg/dL and greater than 125 mg/dL, respectively. SPSS version 29 was used to analyse information obtained. Significant level considered was at probability less than 0.05. Majority of respondents were males (95.6%). Overall prevalence of prediabetes was 26.4%, and diabetes was 9.1%. The mean FBS was 99.90 mg/dl; the 50th and 75th percentile were 97.0 mg/dL, and 110.0 mg/dL respectively. Age, educational level, driving experience years, and daily driving hours were driving-related factors that significantly influenced prediabetes and diabetes (P < 0.05). High prevalence of prediabetes may progress to diabetes without intervention. Fatigue due to long hours of driving daily may be a predisposing factor to road traffic accident. We, therefore, recommend that driver’s unions should support commercial drivers to check their fasting blood sugar regularly.

This study investigated the comparative effects of co-administration of aqueous and methanol fractions of Cleome rutidosperma and Hunteria umbellata on hematopoiesis in L-NAME/STZinduced hypertensive and diabetic male Wistar rats. Hypertension and diabetes are chronic metabolic disorders that frequently coexist and contribute to cardiovascular complications through oxidative stress and hematological alterations. Traditional medicinal plants such as Cleome rutidosperma and Hunteria umbellata have been reported to possess antihypertensive and antidiabetic properties, yet their combined effects on blood cell formation remain underexplored. Hematological indices were evaluated to determine their effects on erythropoiesis, leukopoiesis, and thrombopoiesis. The findings revealed that both extracts produced beneficial effects on altered hematological parameters, with the methanol fraction showing greater hematoprotective efficacy. The methanol fraction significantly improved total lymphocyte, mid- sized cell percentage, and platelet indices, indicating enhanced immune response, erythropoietic stability, and hemostatic balance. These results suggest that the methanol fraction of Cleome rutidosperma and Hunteria umbellata exerts superior restorative effects on hematopoiesis in L- NAME/STZ-induced hypertensive and diabetic rats, highlighting its therapeutic potential in managing hematological disturbances associated with cardiometabolic disorders.

BARRIERS AND FACILITATORS OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AMONG PATIENTS WITH TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS IN UNIVERSITY OF BENIN TEACHING HOSPITAL,BENIN CITY, EDO STATE,NIGERIA.

Abstract
This study investigated the barriers and facilitators of physical activity among patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus(T2DM) attending the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 150 participants recruited via purposive sampling.Data were collected using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), Barriers to Physical Activity Questionnaire (BPAQ), and Facilitators of Physical Activity Questionnaire (FPAQ), alongside clinical data such as Body Mass Index (BMI). Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: The cohort had a mean age of 60.2±11.43 years and was predominantly female (62.0%). Most participants were classified as engaging in a moderate level of physical activity (73.3%). The most significant barriers to physical activity were lack of willpower (56.7%), lack of energy (54.7%), lack of resources (54.0%), and lack of time (53.3%). Key facilitators, rated as "very important," included improved blood sugar control (49.3%), advice from healthcare providers (43.3%), and having a safe neighborhood for walking (44.7%). Statistical analysis revealed a significant association between age group and the perception of "flexible work schedule" as a facilitator (χ²=31.336, p=0.008), indicating age-related differences. Conversely, no significant gender differences were found in perceived barriers (χ²=0.860, p=0.835) or facilitators (χ²=3.869, p=0.276). The presence of co-morbidities was significantly associated with reporting "lack of time" as a barrier (χ²=9.709, p=0.021). Conclusion and Implications: The engagement in physical activity among T2DM patients is shaped by a complex interplay of psychological,social, environmental, and health-related factors. The findings underscore the necessity for comprehensive, tailored interventions that target motivational enhancement, improve resource accessibility, and foster supportive environments to improve physical activity adherence. The research also emphasizes the critical role healthcare providers play in promoting active life style
