Abstract
This study was carried out to investigate the influence of mass media
on political awareness among youth in Benin city Four research questions were raised for this study which are outline how does exposure to different forms of mass media affect the political awareness and engagement of Nigerian youth? What role do specific mass media platforms, play in shaping the political opinions and behaviours of Nigerian youth? What are the perceptions and experiences of Nigerian youth regarding the portrayal of political issues and actors in mass media? To what extent do Nigerian youth trust the information disseminated by mass media regarding political events and issues?
The population of the study comprised of one hundred and seventyfour thousand, three hundred and sixty-two students (171,362) according to
the population census conducted in 2006. The sample for the study consists of one hundred and fifty (150) youths. The sample size for this study was selected using the random sampling technique. The major findings of the study it was revealed that the print media work
well with participatory approaches. it was indicated that unemployment is one of the socio-economic factors that influence the political awareness of Nigerian youth. It was seen that some students do not ask questions in class. It was seen that students like schools were the teachers are friendly. it was revealed that poverty is one of the socio-economic factors influence the political awareness of Nigerian youth. From the study it was recommended that to ensure effective, efficient and un-biased political mobilization by the mass media, there should be completely total autonomy, which will in turn ensure a free and independent press. It is the researcher's opinion that the independence of the media can go a long way to make things right and purposeful in political mobilization by the media to the general public benefit.
