PREVELANCE OF HELICOBACTER PYLORI AMONG STUDENTS OF COLLEGE OF MEDICAL SCIENCES AND FACULTY OF AGRICULTURE

Abstract
Helicobacter Pylori infection has been identified as an important risk factor for the development of peptic ulcer disease (PUD) and gastric cancers. The purpose of this study aimed to determine the prevalence of H. pylori infection and associated risk factors in undergraduate students of college of medical science and faculty of Agriculture in University of Benin. Whole blood samples were randomly collected from 93 participants both male and female and analyzed using antibodies against H. pylori. Participants' demographic and clinical information were obtained using a structured questionnaire. The study results showed that out of 93 selected participants, 59 (63.9%) showed positive for Helicobacter Pylori antibodies, while 34(36.6.%) were negative for Helicobacter antibodies. Popularity of Helicobacter Pylori infection was f o u n d t o b e sl i g h t l y h i g h e r i n f e ma l e p a rt i c i p a n ts c om p a r e d wi t h ma l e participants. Based on age, the prevalence of Helicobacter Pylori infection was significantly higher (P<0.05) in participants from 16 to 25 years old compared to other age groups. Symptomatic participants primarily complained of heartburn, followed by loss of appetite, abdominal pain, nausea, bloating and eventually vomiting. However, none of them complained about vomiting blood. Identifiable risk factors associated with infection include misuse of pain killers drugs, infected drinking water, living with someone having the bacteria among others .The aim of this work was to generate information focusing on the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection in study participants. The information generated will help provide the public health intervention needed to examine these issues and provide evidence-based prevention to students inthe College of Medical Sciences and the Faculty of Agriculture as well as the generalpopulation of the University of Benin

This study was designed to investigate the Availability and Utilization of ICT Tools for Virtual Learning During Covid 19 Era and Its Impact on Academic Performance. The Simple Random sampling technique was adopted to get a sample size of 101 respondents from the total population of 335 Library and Information Science Students from 100 - 400 Level in the University of Benin as at the 2022/2023 academic session. A well-structured questionnaire was used for data collection. The purpose of the study was aimed at Determining the types of ICT tools used for virtual learning during the COVID 19 era in the University of Benin, Examining the level of availability of ICT tools for virtual learning during the COVID 19 era in the University of Benin, Examining the impact of virtual learning on the academic performance of undergraduates in the university of Benin during the COVID 19 era and Ascertaining the challenges of associated with the use of virtual learning during covid-19 era in the University of Benin. A total of 101 copies of questionnaires were distributed to the respondents and 81 copies were retrieved and found to be usuable, resulting to a 82% response rate. Based on the results, it was recommended that School Administration should be able to provide bandwidth for lecturers so as to be able to teach the students without any interruptions, Most lecturers doesn’t know how to navigate through the computer system to organize virtual classes. The School Administration should be able to train its staff on how to use these ICT tools well, Students and Lecturers should also be disciplined enough to focus in class when they are learning virtually, because virtual learning gives room for distractions and Students should also be able to source for an alternative when it comes to powering their devices as a result of erratic power supply, like getting a power or solar supply

ASSESSMENT OF BIOLOGY UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS PERCEPTION OF THE USE OF EXPERIMENT IN THE TEACHING OF CELL BIOLOGY

Abstract
Undergraduate students have different perceptions of the use of experiments in the teaching of cell biology.This study aimed to identify some of the student's opinions about the use of the us of experiments in the teaching of cell biology. A descriptive survey research design was utilized and the study was guided by seven research questions. The research was conducted at the University of Benin in Edo state, Nigeria. A total of 150 undergraduate students were selected from three departments at the University of Benin. Plant Biology and Biotechnology (50 students), Animal and Environmental Biology (50 students), and Curriculum and Instructional Technology (50 students). The sampling technique employed was simple random sampling. The data were collected with a questionnaire instrument and analyzed using simple percentages and means. The findings indicated that students expressed working with live cells and observing their behavior was enjoyable. The results also show that there are available materials in the experiment of bacterial cell-like cell culture dishes, Petri dishes, pipettes, etc. Also, results show that undergraduate cell biology students face challenges such as teaching methods used by the lecturer and lack of learning aids. Additionally, some factors influence students' perceptions such as the amount of time required to complete the experiment, the level of difficulty of the experiment, etc. In conclusion, it is therefore recommended that teachers should adapt their teaching methods, increase their knowledge of conducting experiments, allocate suf icient time, and provide adequate learning aids. Additionally, researchers recommend that teachers ensure proper preparation and caution before conducting experiments

ASSESSMENT OF THE ROLE OF SPORTING ACTIVITIES AMONG UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS IN SELECTED TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS IN BENIN CITY, EDO STATE

Background: Physical inactivity is a major global public health concern, contributing to the rise of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and premature mortality. Despite the widely acknowledged importance of sporting activities for physical, mental, and social well-being, there is a dearth of comprehensive data on the participation of undergraduate students in Nigeria. Understanding the role of sports among this population is crucial for developing effective health promotion strategies. Objectives: To assess the role of sporting activities among undergraduate students in selected tertiary institutions in Benin City in order to inform policy and program development regarding sports. Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 400 undergraduate students in selected tertiary institutions in Benin City, Edo State. Data was collected using a pretested, self-administered questionnaire. The study utilized the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), the Exercise Benefits and Barriers Scale (EBBS), and the Academic Achievement Questionnaire (AAQ) as tools. Data was entered and analyzed using IBM SPSS version 25.0. Bivariate and multivariate analysis was conducted, with the level of significance set at p < 0.05. Results: The mean age of respondents was 21.95 ± 2.834 years, with a slight predominance of females 207 (51.7%). Knowledge of sporting activities was poor with only a little over one-third 147 (36.8%) of the undergraduates demonstrating good knowledge of sporting activities. Majority 292 (73.0%) of undergraduates expressed a positive attitude towards sporting activities. Only 135 (33.8%) of the undergraduates participated in sporting activities. The most common sports were running (49.8%), football (45.8%), and high jump (41.1%). Key determinants of 1 non-participation included lack of time and heavy academic workload. Students who engaged in sporting activities had better academic performance compared to those who did not, though it was not statistically significant. Conclusion: Although undergraduate students largely possess a positive attitude towards sporting activities, their knowledge is low and participation is low. The study highlights the need for structured interventions to improve knowledge and remove the structural barriers to participation, which, in turn, contribute positively to the academic performance of students.
