Abstract
The purpose of this study is to find out the perception and factors influencing utilization of healthcare services in Ekosodin Community, Ovia North East LGA. The descriptive survey research design was used for this study. The total population of the
study is 45000 with a sample size of 200. The convenience sampling technique was used. The instrument for data collection was a well-designed structured questionnaire which was validated by the project Supervisor and two other lecturers from the
Department of Health, Safety and Environmental education. The reliability of the instrument was established using the test-retest method of reliability which yielded a Coefficient of 0.821. The data collated was analyzed using descriptive statistical tools
such as frequency and percentage tables. Findings from this study revealed that residents in Ekosodin community have
a bad perception towards the healthcare services available in the community. Also several factors influences the utilization of healthcare services by residents in Ekosodin community ranging from; the health facilities not being open 24 hours, the
long distance to the facility, the cue at the facility, unavailability of drugs, doctors being absent and the poor quality of treatment being received. Also finances influences the utilization of healthcare services among the respondents. It is therefore
concluded that the residents of Ekosodin community, have bad perception towards the available healthcare services available in the community and several factors influences the way they perceive and think about the available services and their willingness to utilize these services.
