INFLUENCE OF BIG BROTHER TELEVISION REALITY SHOW ON THE LIFESTYLE OF YOUTH IN EDO STATE

Abstract
This study, anchored on the tenets of cultivation and uses and gratification theories, investigated the influence of the Big Brother Naija reality television show on the lifestyle of youth in Edo State. The study became necessary following the assumption that Big Brother Naija show has the abilities to positively or negatively influence viewership. Thus, four hundred (400) youth, selected to reflect and represent the eighteen (18) Local Government Area (LGA) of Edo State, comprised the sample of this study. The sample was selected through purposive, stratified random and random sampling techniques. An eleven (11) item questionnaire was used to generate data from the sample. Data generated were analyzed and presented
with the aid of frequency tables, simple percentage and mean score. Findings show that the extent to which youth are exposed to Big Brother Naija Show is very high. It was also revealed that the attitude of youth in Edo State towards Big Brother Naija show is very strong. It was also found that youth utilize the show for entertainment, education, information and socialization. However, they are mostly entertained from watching the show. The study concluded that the Influence of Big Brother Naija Reality Television Show on youth is more negative than positive. It concluded that the show remains a formidable force in molding the lifestyle of youth in Edo State. It was therefore recommended that since reality shows such as Big Brother Naija has serious influence on youth, they must observe caution while watching the programmes so that they don’t get addicted to the programme or it doesn’t affect their lifestyle negatively.

GUARDIAN AND VANGUARD COVERAGE OF ALLEGED FINANCIAL MISAPPROPRIATION BY EX GOVERNORS

ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to determine the extent of newspaper coverage given to alleged financial misappropriation by ex governors. The method adopted for the purpose of this study was the content analysis method. This data was carefully collected from the select newspapers stories published from July to September 2024. A total of 65 editions of the Guardian and Vanguard newspapers were collated and analyzed. The objectives of the study were to examine the frequency; prominence, format and genre given to stories on alleged financial misappropriation by ex governors in the select newspapers so as to measure the extent the print media report alleged financial misappropriation by ex governors cases. To this effect, findings revealed that the select newspapers under study did not give much coverage to alleged financial misappropriation by ex governors. Straight news format took a major lead of the coverage than others. Findings also revealed that enough prominence were not given to the issue by the select newspapers as majority of the stories were reported in the inside pages of the select newspapers hence, the media failed in its agenda setting role of elevating issues in the mind of the public. However, the researcher recommended that newspapers should improve and frequently focus more on the coverage of issues on alleged financial misappropriation by ex governors. This will enable the public know what is happening in the society as the level at which newspaper cover news stories is very low. Detailed account on alleged financial misappropriation by ex governors should be consistently reported by the print media also, Newspapers should give more prominence to issues of alleged financial misappropriation by ex governors using their front pages to place emphasis on the relevance of the issue. This will enable news readers attach corresponding importance to such issues.

ASSESSING THE IMPACT OF SELECTED EDUCATIONAL APPS ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF UNIBEN STUDENTS. (A Case Study of University of Benin Undergraduates)

This study was made to find out how certain training apps affect how well uniben students
do in school. Google Apps for Education is a free set of tools for conversation and
working together, like email, calendar, and documents. Google Apps for Education is
used in schools all over the world by more than 30 million kids, teachers, and school
administrators. Many kids will use these tools when they go to college and when they start
working. A simple random sampling method was used to choose 220 students from all 11
schools at the University of Benin to take part in the study. For this study, a poll was used
as the method of research, and a questionnaire was used to gather data. The following
was found when the collected data was looked at: That having access to the internet is the
most important factor in whether or not students use Google Apps for Education. The
learning setting, the teacher, the students themselves, and their gender were the next most
important factors. So, it was suggested that the institution pay more attention to making
sure that students have access to the internet, and that this should be the top priority. After that, the learning environment should be set up to encourage the use of
technological devices, and power outlets and electricity should be installed. Teachers
should also be trained and encouraged to change the way they teach to use Google Apps
for Education, and students should be shown how to use the tool.

COVERAGE OF NEW CBN POLICY ON REDESIGNED NAIRA NOTE BY SELECT MAINSTREAM NEWSPAPER IN NIGERIA

This research was conducted to examine the coverage of newCBNpolicyonredesigned naira note, by select mainstream newspapers in Nigeria. Its aimwereto, ascertain the level of coverage given to CBN new policy on redesigned nairanote, find out what prominence was given to new CBN policy on redesigned nairanote, ascertain the possible position of newspapers in the newspaper reportage of CBNpolicy on redesigned naira note, determine the pattern of reports given to reportageon new CBN policy on redesigned naira note and lastly ascertain the frequencyofstories on the CBN policy on redesigned naira note. The content analysis methodwas adopted to carefully collect data from newspaper stories published fromOctober26, 2022 to February 2023. A total of 71 editions of both vanguard and guardiannewspapers, were collated and analyzed. The study was anchored on the Agendasetting theory and the media dependency theory. The findings of the researchrevealed that; Media organizations in Nigeria, gave a high level of reportage onCBNpolicy on redesigned naira note, media organizations did not give prominence tothereportage of activities on CBN policy on redesigned naira note, media organizationsfailed in their correlation or interpretative function as most of the items onthesubject matter were reported as straight news, newspapers in Nigeria werenot
frequent enough with the reportage of CBN policy on redesigned naira note, mediaorganizations is on the negative stand point on the issue of CBNpolicyonredesigned naira note, media organizations, covered more items on criticismandreactions of the public on the policy. The researcher however recommends that;
Media organizations should avoid adding too much emotions to their newstories, sothat the audience will not get too emotional and miss the message, on issuesofgovernment policies, media organizations, should be more frequent in the reportageof stories, that has to do with policies at its early stage, rather than engagingintherush hour approach, to ensure proper understanding, more media practitioners shouldbe trained on financial analysis, so that when any policy that has to do withfinance, is made by the government, they will be able to conduct proper analysis on it, whiletrying to represent the public, on issues of government policies, the media shouldplace more focus on stories that will enlighten the members of the public rather thanprojecting stories of attack and problems emanating from the policy, the mediashould try as much as possible to be on a neutral position and uphold truthandaccuracy, so that they will not present the government in a bad light.

SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMISATIONS INFLUENCE ON WEB CONTENTS VISIBILITY IN MODERN DAY JOURNALISM: A CASE STUDY OF GOOGLE AND YAHOO

Journalism as a whole has developed and moved into a more modernized form which is on various digital platforms. News stories, articles, editorials etc. have all moved online without the hardcopy dying off but there has been a drastic decrease in hardcopy readership. This further encouraged media houses to take their contents online, to also build online readership. There are various factors that come to play to ensure that these online readers being targeted actually see, hear or watch the contents and one of the most important is Search Engine Optimisation aka SEO.Search Engine Optimisation has become a deciding factor on who gets to see what and what gets seen by web users. It’s a new media skill that has become important in the news room for web journalists but adequate research hasn’t been conducted. It still remains a big mystery to many modern journalists. This work studies the level of impact and influence this SEO has on web contents visibility to their target web browser. This study uses two of the world’s most popular search engines as case study. Google and Yahoo although different are both search engines that have algorithms that contribute to contents visibility.

This study will investigate the perception of photojournalism and photography as career choices among mass communication students. The purpose of this study is to find out the perception of photojournalism and photography as career choices among mass communication students, what barriers influence their perception, and to ascertain if technological advancement and the improvement of teaching strategies will improve their perception of photojournalism and photography as career choices. Premised on perception theory and persuasion theory this study used the survey research method applying questionnaires to elicit responses from respondents at the Ekehuan campus of the University of Benin. The findings of the study revealed that most mass communications students have a neutral perception of photography and photojournalism as career choices and they see photojournalism photography as self-sufficient career choices which can help in reducing the unemployment rate in Nigeria. However, the findings revealed that improvement in the practical aspect of teaching strategies in photojournalism and photography-related courses will positively influence students' perception of them as careers and that there are various misconceptions mass communication students have concerning photography and photojournalism as career choices. Based on the findings from the research, the researcher recommends that focus should be put on improving and using practicals when teaching courses relating to the field of photography and photojournalism. The researcher also recommended that grants and sponsorship should be provided to reduce the burden of the high cost of equipment needed in procuring technological gadgets for students to practice in these fields.
