Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate effect of stress on students’ academic performance of students in senior secondary in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. To guide the study, four research questions were raised and one hypothesis was formulated and tested at 0.05 level significance. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design. The population of the study consists of thirteen thousand one hundred and seventy-seven (13,177) SS1 and SS2 students in fourteen (14) public senior secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. The sample size consists of six hundred selected SS1 and SS2 students representing 5% of the population from three (3) public senior secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State representing 25% of School. The schools were randomly selected while the students were purposively selected from SS1 and SS2. The instrument used for data collection was a structured questionnaire titled “effect of stress management and academic performance of secondary school students in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State.”. It was validated by the researchers’ supervisor and two experts. Its reliability was established at 0.77 using Cronbach Alpha method. The data collected for the study was analyzed using frequency tables, mean and standards deviation. The findings from the study revealed that academic workloads such as examination cause stress on students It was also recommended that guidance programs such as seminars and public lectures on stress awareness should be organized periodically for students so that they can be adequately equipped with the needed skills to handle issues related to academic stress. Students should be encouraged to make use of the counselling centers.
