Abstract
This study examined “The Influence of Career Counselling on Students’ Career Decision-Making in Senior Secondary Schools.” The primary objective was to determine how career counselling impacts students’ ability to make informed, confident, and realistic career choices. A descriptive survey research design was adopted, and data were collected from a sample of senior secondary school students through a structured questionnaire. The data were analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations. The findings revealed that career counselling significantly influences students’ career decision-making by enhancing their self-awareness, understanding of career opportunities, and confidence in making occupational choices. The study also showed that the lack of adequate counselling services and trained personnel
often results in confusion, poor decision-making, and overreliance on parental or peer influence. Furthermore, the research established that effective career counselling helps students develop goal-setting skills and motivates them to
pursue careers that align with their interests and abilities. Based on these findings, it was recommended that schools should employ qualified guidance counsellors, integrate career counselling into the curriculum, and organize regular career workshops and seminars. The study concludes that career counselling remains an essential component of educational development, helping students make sound career decisions that contribute to both personal fulfilment and national development

This study examined the Cyberbullying And Mental Health Among Students In University Of Benin. A total of 140 respondents participated in the study, providing insights into their perception on cyber bullying and mental health, and the relationship between the two. This study employed a descriptive survey research design, The data for this study was collected by using the questionnaires, The findings indicate that The mental health impact of cyberbullying was also significant, with anxiety being the most common psychological consequence, followed by depression and stress. Many students also reported low self-esteemand a sense of social isolation. These findings underscore the severe consequences of cyberbullying, affecting students’ mental well being and overall academic performance. The study concluded that The low awareness of available support systems, along with their perceived ineffectiveness, highlights a gap in addressing the needs of students who are victims of cyberbullying

A CLINICAL INVESTIGATION OF HEART RATE RECOVERY AS AN INDEX OF AUTONOMIC FUNCTION IN HEALTHY YOUNG ADULTS: IMPLICATIONS FOR PREVENTIVE SCREENING

Heart rate recovery (HRR) following exercise serves as a simple, noninvasive indicator of autonomic function and cardiovascular fitness. Impaired HRR has been linked with increased cardiovascular risk, even in apparently healthy individuals. However, there is limited data on HRR among young adults in the Nigerian population. This study aimed to characterize typical HRR values among undergraduate students of the University of Benin and to examine their relationship with key lifestyle and stress-related factors, including physical activity and perceived academic stress. A total of 346 apparently healthy male and female undergraduate student aged 18 – 25 years with a mean age of 21.09 ± 1.87 years participated in this cross sectional observational study. Of the total respondents, 167 (48.3%) were male and 179 (51.7%) were female. Resting and exercise heart rate, and blood pressure were
recorded. HRR was determined at 1, 2, and 5-minutes post-exercise. Physical activity levels were assessed using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), while perceived stress was evaluated with the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). Data was
summarize using descriptive statistics. Independent t-tests, ANOVA, correlation, and linear regression, with significance set at p < 0.05 were used to test the hypothesis. Results: The participants had mean HRR values of 50.34 ± 19.61 bpm (1-minute),
65.32 ± 21.27 bpm (2-minute), and 75.35 ± 22.72 bpm (5-minute). No significantgender differences were observed in HRR (p > 0.05). Physical activity showed a significant negative correlation with 5-minute HRR (r = –0.15, p = 0.005), while perceived academic stress showed no significant relationship with HRR across time points. HRR significantly predicted maximum heart rate (B = 0.737, p < 0.001), but not resting cardiovascular parameters. Conclusion: The findings suggest that HRR after 6MWT among healthy young adults at the University of Benin reflects generally normal autonomic recovery patterns, independent of gender and academic stress levels. However, reduced physical activity may influence delayed autonomic recovery. Regular physical activity and preventive cardiovascular screening are recommended to promote optimal autonomic health.

HEALTH AND RISK ASSESSMENT OF HEAVY METALS IN SOIL AND PLANTS AROUND A DUMP SITE

Solid wastes constitute a disaster for human health and environmental degradation. Dumpsites in urban settlements are used as sources of nutrient rich soils for cultivating crops without regard to the risks of perceived toxic heavy metal pollution from the wastes. Water sources near the dumpsites are used as domestic water source for the people living near such sites. This water is often contaminated by toxic heavy metals leaching from the dumpsite. Heavy metals are known to accumulate in the plants then passed to the humans through the food chain. Prolonged consumption of unsafe concentrations of heavy metals through foodstuffs may lead to the accumulation of heavy metals in the humans causing disruption of numerous biochemical processes. The aim of this study was to determine the level of heavy metals in the vegetables and soil samples collected around Oluku dumpsite. The study also sought to assess the knowledge of the health risks posed by the site to the residents living around the dumpsite. Heavy metal determination samples collected was carried out using X- ray fluorescence (XRF) analytical method.
The results indicate that the dumpsite didn’t shown to be having high concentrations of heavy metals, since some heavy metals could not be detected in dumpsite. This may be as a result of less contamination with those metals due to human activities. Some metals could not be detected; the implication is that the concentration of these metals are below detection limit or not present at all. It was also observed that the dumpsite had higher concentration of these metals like magnesium (Mg) than others; this could be attributed to the presence of waste carrying higher amounts of magnesium. The heavy metals concentration in these dumpsites were all within the WHO acceptable limit in the dumpsite.

EFFECT OF HEAT ON ASCORBIC ACID CONTENT OF SOME LOCALLY SOURCED FRUITS (MANGO, TANGERINE, LEMON AND GRAPE)

Ascorbic acid plays a critical role in various metabolic activities such as the absorption of iron from nonheme products and negates the formation of reactive oxygen, a major product responsible for oxidative stress and recent studies has shown that it is thermally labile. The effect of heat on its content in fruit juices has been successfully investigated. Fresh fruit samples were obtained from New Benin market and the juice extracts were obtained using mechanical press after which temperatures of 40,
60, 80, and 100°C were applied and the ascorbic acid contents of the fresh juice extracts and after treatment were determined using iodimetry at interval of 24 hours for five days. From the results obtained, the ascorbic acid content was found highest for
mango juice extract with a value of 11.40mg. The values obtained for grape, lemon, and tangerine are 10.42, 5.86, and 4.98mg respectively. From the values, it was obvious that heating played a major role in the ascorbic acid content of the extracts. This was demonstrated by plotting the contents in mg as functions of time from where it was seen that Lemon fruit juice had the highest correlation coefficient of 0.9918 at 60°C while the least was found for grape fruit juice at 40 and 80°C with a value of 0.9205.

ANALYSING THE INFLUENCE OF CULTURAL DIVERSITY ON DIRECTING APPROACHES: A STUDY OF TWO UNIBEN STUDENT DIRECTORS

Abstract
This thesis presents a critical analysis of directorial practice within the multicultural crucible of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), fundamentally challenging the academic notion of directing as a universally applied, objective craft. Instead, it asserts that directorial authority and aesthetic decision-making are not neutral but are profoundly and demonstrably conditioned by the director's inherited cultural epistemology. To interrogate this assertion, a qualitative comparative case study was employed, focusing on two student directors whose cultural backgrounds represent structurally opposed aesthetic and social systems: Julia Andrew (Edo), rooted in a hierarchical, spectacle-centric framework, and Chidumaga Kingsley Orakwelu (Igbo), informed by a democratic, dialogue-centric ethos. The data, subjected to Critical Thematic Analysis (CTA), unveiled a decisive cultural cleavage in ideological approach, which manifested across three critical polarities. The first polarity concerns the source of Aesthetic Authority (Command versus Consensus). Andrew's Edo-derived approach favoured Authoritative Aesthetic Intervention, relying on her personal cultural custodianship to unilaterally impose high-status ceremonial elements for visual spectacle, exemplified by her Monologic Command structure that prioritised efficiency and structural fidelity. Conversely, Orakwelu's Igbo method operated on a Dialogic Paradox: asserting necessary institutional control initially, but quickly releasing authority to the ensemble to achieve authenticity through communal validation. His Dialogic Negotiation prioritised legitimacy and collective ownership. The second critical cleavage lies in Cultural Function (Preservation versus Critique). Andrew's conservative approach used theatre to validate and affirm the prestige of inherited Edo social and aesthetic status. In stark contrast, Orakwelu leveraged the stage as a liminal space for Cultural Critique, actively demanding that the ensemble challenge and revise "what we deem fit to call culture." The study concludes that the contemporary Nigerian student director is caught in a state of ideological conflict, struggling to reconcile Western academic structures with powerful, inherited cultural models. To address this, the thesis strongly recommends that theatre pedagogy in Nigeria must be decolonised through the implementation of structured cross-cultural rehearsal protocols and a critical re-evaluation of assessment metrics to prioritise the Dialogic Value of the artistic process over conservative aesthetic outcomes.

THE GLASS CEILING SYNDROME AND SELF-INFLICTED LIMITATIONS AND SLOW CAREER PROGRESSION OF WOMEN IN ACADEMIC ORGANIZATIONS IN NIGERIA

This study examined the relationship between institutional barriers, psychological factors, and career progression among female academic staff at the University of Benin, with limited input from two other Nigerian universities for contextual comparison. Descriptive results showed that many women were clustered in lower academic ranks, had experienced delays in promotion cycles, and were underrepresented in leadership positions. The data also highlighted constraints such as limited mentorship, unclear promotion guidelines, challenges balancing work and family life, and self-limiting behaviours such as hesitating to apply for leadership roles. Qualitative insights strengthened these findings by illustrating how gender norms, workplace culture, and internalised beliefs influence career decisions. The study concludes that gender-based disparities in career progression remain a significant challenge within UNIBEN. While institutional policies exist to support academic promotion, their implementation is inconsistent, and cultural norms continue to disadvantage women. Individual factors such as confidence, motivation, and perceived suitability for leadership further shape career choices. Leadership training for women, the university should sponsor workshops and training programmes aimed at equipping women with administrative skills and confidence. Support for Work–Life Balance, policies such as flexible scheduling and accessible childcare services can help reduce the domestic burden that disproportionately affects women. This study contributes to existing literature by presenting current evidence on gendered career barriers in UNIBEN and highlighting the combined effect of institutional constraints and self-limiting behaviours

IN SILICO EVALUATION OF POTENTIAL ANTIMALARIAL PHYTOCONSTITUENTS FROM TWO MEDICINAL PLANTS USED IN NIGERIA ETHNOMEDICINE

Malaria is a life-threatening disease spread to humans by some types of mosquitoes. It is mostly found in tropical countries. It is preventable and curable. Because current medication have begun to lose their effectiveness due to resistance in the causative agent, Plasmodium, there is need to develop new antimalarial lead candidates. Using an in silico approach, this study aimed to explore the bioactive compounds present in the Piper guineense and Chrysobalanus icaco with the possibility of inhibiting plasmepsin II (PDB ID:1LF3), a drug target protein of Plasmodium falciparum. Dihydroartemisinin was used as a positive control in
this study to explore the possible function of plasmepsin II. The software used include; PyRx, PyMol, ProTox-3.0, Biovia Discovery Studio 2020, and SwissADME web server; the databases used were Protein Data Bank (PDB) and PubChem. The docking study revealed that β-Cubebene (P. guineense) and Spiro[androst-5-ene-17,1'- cyclobutan]-2'-one, 3-hydroxy-, (3beta,17beta)- (C. icaco) have the highest binding free energies of -7.4kcal/mol and -9.1kcal/mol respectively with the target protein, Plasmepsin II. Compounds from Piper guineense; Epiglobulol, (-)-alpha-Copaene, Agarospirol, 4,6,6- Trimethyl-2-(3-methylbuta-1,3-dienyl)-3-oxatricyclo[5.1.0.0(2,4)]octane, Bulnesol had similar amino acid interaction as the positive control, Dihydroatremisinin (DHA) but with however lower binding affinities compared to it. In conclusion, compounds from Piper guineense presented with more promising bioactive compounds for antimalarial drug development. Further analytical study can, therefore be done
to establish evidence of concept and promote the development of new antimalarial lead candidates.

In this project, I developed a web application to Educate users on social engineering by testing them with real life scenarios to familiarize them with social engineering tricks. The application is designed using mainly the Java technology, it is designed as a web application so it can run on browsers, as a result, the user interfaces are developed using web technologies such as HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript. The application logic is developed using Java beans and Java Servlet. The application is designed using the Model-View-Controller approach (MVC). The data persistent layer is maintained using the MySQL relational database. The simulator developed will help the users easily identify social engineering attacks, this will help in the long-lasting battle against social engineering.

SOCIOCULTURAL FACTORS INFLUENCING FEMALE PARTICIPATION IN SPORTS

The study was conducted to investigate the sociocultural factor influencing female participation in sports. To make it possible four research questions were raised to guide the study. Descriptive survey research design was adopted to accomplish the objectives of the study. The population of the study consists of all 44,699 undergraduate student in Universities in Edo state and the sample size of 300 accessible undergraduate was used for the study. The instrument for data collection was the questionnaire developed by the researcher and was validated by the researcher’s supervisor and two other experts from the Department of Human Kinetics and Sport Science. The reliability coefficient was 0.741 was obtained using Cronbach Alpha Co-efficient. The data collected were analyzed statistically using the statistical package of social sciences (SPSS) software. The study established that participation of women in sports was influenced by several factors. Some women participate in physical sport simply because they loved the game and because they found it exciting and fun. The sampled student across universities in Edo state participated in sport because they hoped that it would improve their lives in terms of keeping healthy and fit and learning especially reproductive health. Other respondents also considered it is a platform for socialization and making new friends. Finally the study recommend that government at all levels should create enabling environment for unrestricted participation of female in sports and its management, government should encourage female participation in sport by providing scholarship and
other incentives to female athletes who excel in any sporting competition and that mass media should organize enlightenment programme that will eliminate all socio-cultural biases against female participation in sporting activities.
