Abstract
Indiscipline is a form of conduct that reflects the character and value system of an individual within society. It arises from unacceptable values and behaviors that regulate how a person relates with others, particularly within social institutions such as schools. In the context of secondary education, indiscipline is viewed as a manifestation of negative behavior that violates established rules and regulations designed to promote effective teaching and learning. These rules commonly address areas such as dress code, punctuality, school schedules, and social conduct. Failure to comply with such standards often results in disciplinary measures.
Scholars have identified various acts—including stealing, violence, drug abuse, examination malpractice, and sexual misconduct—as expressions of indiscipline in schools. Indiscipline has been described as disobedience, disregard for authority, and the breakdown of moral and psychological control, leading to disorder and disruption within the school environment. It represents a refusal to adhere to established norms and regulations, thereby undermining the smooth operation of educational institutions. Among secondary school students, indiscipline manifests both within and outside the school setting and remains one of the most significant challenges confronting school administrators.
