Abstract
The socio-economic interactions between Benin and Esan people in pre-colonial
times are an important aspect of the history of Nigeria. The Benin Empire, which was
located in present-day Edo state, was one of the most powerful states in West Africa during the 15th and 16th centuries. The Esan people, on the other hand, are an ethnic group located in present-day Edo state and some parts of Delta state in Nigeria. The relationship between the Benin Empire and the Esan people was characterized by trade, politics, and culture, which had a significant impact on the development of both societies.
