AN ASSESSMENT OF THE LEVEL OF PRINCIPAL SUPERVISORY PRACTICES IN PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN OVIA NORTH EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE

Abstract
This study was designed to examined the assessment of the level of
principal supervisory practices in Ovia North East Local Government Area of
Edo State. In order to achieve the purpose intended, three research questions
were raised. The study adopted a survey descriptive research design. The
sample population of the study was 100 respondents randomly selected from
secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. the instrument for the study was questionnaire which was validated through
expert judgment approach and was tested for reliability through the test-re-test
method with reliability index of 0.52. a descriptive statistic was adopted the
data collected were analyzed using frequency counts and percentage. The study further shows that there is low level of principal supervision
in public secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of
Edo State; there was low level of personnel supervision in public in public
secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State
and there is low level of student supervision in public secondary schools in
Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. Based on the findings, it was recommended that government should
initiate a periodic training for principals of supervisory practices; principals
should pay better attention to teachers to ensure that they carry out their duties
effectively and principals should constantly engage in classroom visitation and
monitoring of student’s academic performance.
