INFLUENCE OF GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING AWARENESS ON MENTAL HEALTH AMONG UNIVERSITY OF BENIN STUDENTS, EDO STATE

Abstract
Thisstudyinvestigatedtheinfluenceofguidanceandcounsellingawarenessonmentalhealth amongstudentsoftheUniversityofBenin,BeninCity,Nigeria.Themainobjectivewasto
determinetheextenttowhichstudentsareawareoftheavailableguidanceandcounselling
servicesandhowsuchawarenessrelatestotheirmentalhealth.Thestudyalsoexaminedwhether differencesexistinthisrelationshipbasedonsexandage. Adescriptivesurveyresearchdesignwasadopted.Thepopulationcomprisedundergraduate studentsoftheUniversityofBenin,whileasampleof150respondentswasselectedusinga simplerandomsamplingtechnique.Datawerecollectedusingastructuredquestionnairetitled
GuidanceandCounsellingAwarenessandMentalHealthScale(GCAMHS).Thedatawere
analyzedusingdescriptivestatistics,PearsonProductMomentCorrelation,andFisher’sZ-testat a0.05levelofsignificance.
FindingsrevealedthatstudentsoftheUniversityofBeninarehighlyawareoftheguidanceand
counsellingservicesavailabletothem.Resultsfurthershowedastrongpositiveandsignificant
relationship(r=0.884,p<0.05)betweenawarenessofguidanceandcounsellingservicesand
students’mentalhealth.However,nosignificantdifferenceswerefoundintherelationshipbased onsexandage.Thestudyconcludedthatawarenessofguidanceandcounsellingservicesplaysa vitalroleinpromotingstudents’mentalhealthandemotionalstability.Itrecommendedthatthe
university’scounsellingcentreintensifyawarenesscampaigns,integratecounsellingintostudent lifeactivities,andconductregularmentalhealthsensitizationprograms.
