Abstract
This study examines the impact of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation on athletic performance among student athletes at the University of Benin. Motivation plays a crucial role in sports performance, influencing athletes' effort, persistence, and overall success. This research investigates how intrinsic factors (e.g., enjoyment, personal goals) and extrinsic factors (e.g., rewards, recognition) affect athletic performance. A survey of University of Benin student athletes assessed motivation levels and performance metrics. Findings highlight the relative influence of intrinsic and extrinsic motivators on performance, providing insights for coaches and sports psychologists to optimize athlete support.
