Abstract
This study accessed the implementation of Open Access policies in Institutional Repositories in academic libraries in Edo State, Nigeria. A discriptive survey was employed to carry ou this study. The population of this study comprised of all the profession and non professional staff at the John Harris Library, University of Benin. Eighty three (83) respondents were sampled for this study, due to this small number total enumeration was used. The research instrument used for this study was a self-structured questionnaire to elicit information from the respondents. Data was collected from respondents and analyzed using descriptive statistics like simple percentages and mean and grand mean. Findings revealed that that academic institutions have made significant progress in incoporating Open Access policies into their institutional repositories. clear and user-friendly submission guidelines, training for repository staff, monitoring and evaluating the impact of open access policies and collaborating with faculty members and researchers are some of the best practices for implementing open access. enhancing the dissemination of research outputs, increased collaboration among stakeholders, enhancing feedback mechanisms and investing in technological advancements and infrastructure are some areas of improvement that can be made for improvement of Open Access policies in Institutional Repositories (IRs). With all three having a grand mean above 2.5 which made them significant. Based on the findings above the following recommendations were made: Secure Funding and Institutional Support, promoting awareness and advocacy, engagement with stakeholders for inclusive accessement, Assess Awareness and Adoption of Institutional Repositories, Assess the Adoption of Best Practices for Open Access Implementation, Evaluate the Effectiveness of Open Access Policy Implementation, Identify and Prioritize Areas for Improvement.
