PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH TEACHING AND LEARNING OF EDUCATIONAL MANAGEMENT AS A COURSE OF STUDY IN UNIVERSITY OF BENIN

Abstract
The study focused on the problems associated with teaching and learning of educational management as a course of study in University of Benin, Benin City. Three research questions were raised to guide the study. Survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study comprised of all the eight departments in the Faculty of Education with a total number of 7369 students. 288 students in the Department of
Educational Management, Faculty of Education, University of Benin, Benin city formed the sample population using purposive sampling technique. A questionnaire titled “Problems Associated with Teaching and Learning of Educational Management
Questionnaire (PATLEMQ)” was used and validated by the supervisor. The reliability of the instrument was calculated with the application of Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Coefficient and the reliability was found to be 0.78. Simple percentages were used to analyse the data collected. The findings revealed that the problems associated with teaching and learning of
educational management as a course of study in University of Benin, Benin City include: lack of funding, instructional materials and students attitude towards
educational management as a course of study. There was significant impact of the problems associated with teaching and learning of educational management on
students’ academic performance in University of Benin, Benin City. Based on the findings of this study, it was concluded that problems associated with teaching and learning of educational management as a course of study in University of Benin, Benin City include: lack of funding, instructional materials and students attitude
towards educational management as a course of study. The following recommendations are made: The government should ensure that there is provision of funds for the provision of instructional materials and smooth running of school activities. The government and school authorities should endeavour to ensure that the problems associated with teaching and learning of educational management as a course of study
in University of Benin, Benin City are solved
