Abstract
This research project investigated, communicative functions of Nigerian English in the writing skills of senior secondary school students. The major aim of the study is to examine the influence of Nigerian English on senior secondary school students' writing skills. It also examined the communicative functions of Nigerian English in Nigeria, evaluates the role and place of Nigerian English, and ascertains its effects on the writing skills of students. In order to guide this study, four (4) research questions were raised. This study employed a descriptive survey research design .The target population of this study consist of thirteen (13) public schools in Egor Local Government Area which comprised of 6671 total number of students, and one hundred (100) respondents served as the sample size. The simple random sampling technique was used to aid the study. Questionnaire was used to collect data for the study and was administered to the 100 respondents after due permission was taken from the selected schools. Based on the findings of this study, it is evident that Nigerian English plays a dual role in the linguistic and educational landscape. On one hand, it serves as a medium for identity, and to showcase creativity, and cultural expression; on the other hand, it poses a challenge and threat to Students’ mastery of Standard English, especially in formal writing contexts.
